At the same time, on the tenth floor of the Martial Arts Association building on Cyndoria Road in Junbert, the president, Lucian Upton, was enjoying himself on the sofa.
He loved sex in the office, especially when his partner was the wife of his right-hand man, Franklin Jauncy.
Since Franklin's term was about to end and he'd be transferred soon, he presented his wife to Lucian, hoping to get promoted to president.
Naturally, she was also willing to sacrifice for her husband's career advancement.
"Not bad, not bad! Who knew Franklin had a skillful wife? With those moves of yours, no guy could resist you!" Lucian let out a satisfied sigh.
"Mr. Upton, as long as you're happy, I'm satisfied. If you can help with my husband's promotion and put in a good word with the provincial Martial Arts Association, I'll serve you well," the woman replied, her words a bit muffled since her head was still down, busy with what she was doing.
"Rest assured," Lucian replied with a grin, but deep down, he was contemptuous.
Sleeping with a subordinate's wife for free was his favorite thing.
He never planned to promote Franklin to the presidency. He didn't have the power to decide. It was the government's job.
He could tell Franklin that he did his best. After all, any guy who'd hand over his wife was easy to control.
Just then, a staff member burst in, looking panicked and out of breath.
"What's got you so worked up?" Lucian snapped, pressing down on the woman's head impatiently. "Keep going!"
The woman had no choice but to keep going.
The staff member blurted out, "Mr. Jauncy is dead! He was killed at the Everett wedding! Even his favorite student, Tyron Hurst, is dead too!"
"What?!" Lucian was stunned.
Before he could react, Franklin's wife suddenly jerked her head up, eyes wide with shock, and rushed over to the staff, not even bothering to wipe her mouth.
"What did you say? My husband is dead?" she shouted.
The staff realized he'd just barged in on Lucian messing around with Franklin's wife.
"Speak up!" Lucian barked.
The staff quickly explained what had happened at the Everett family wedding, leaving nothing out.
"Tyron was killed, and Franklin was also slain? Even with Marcus armed, he couldn't stop it?" Lucian scoffed, "Are you kidding me? Do you think I'm stupid? No martial artist in Junbert could dodge a bullet!"
"Mr. Upton, I swear it's true! Lots of people saw it happen!" the staff insisted.
"If that's true, this guy must be way above black level! In the whole city, only I could stand a chance against him," Lucian said, face darkening, glancing at the pale, panicked woman beside him.
He waved the staff off. "You can go now. I need to figure out what to do."
"Mr. Upton, please avenge my husband! I'll do anything you want!" Franklin's wife begged.
Looking at her face, Lucian just felt bored.
He liked married women, not widows.
Franklin's death was a humiliation to the Martial Arts Association. No way he could let that slide.
...
"Whoa, this place is massive!" Daniella exclaimed, mouth hanging open as she stared at the Holy Pharmaceutical building.
"Holy Pharmaceutical is the biggest pharmacy chain in the country. Only Medicine King can compete with them," Allan explained.
"Anything regular folks need always gets monopolized. Back in the day, it was salt and iron. Now it's medicine, oil, tobacco, real estate, etc."
"Sir, are you here for a consultation?" A slim woman in a slit dress walked over.
"No, I'm here to buy some herbs," Allan replied.
"This way, please," she said, leading him to a counter.
"Dr. Lane, this customer wants to buy some herbs."
The doctor didn't even look up. "What are you looking for?"
"Illusion Grass, hundred-year-old Ganoderma, Four-leaf Fruit, Old Vine Root, aged tangerine peel, Old Clam Pearl..." Allan rattled off over thirty herbs without pausing.
"That's a lot of pricey herbs." Connor Lane was stunned and finally looked up.
The price could be worth millions, which was a handsome commission for him.
"Please wait a moment while I get everything ready for you," Connor said, grinning from ear to ear.
Just then, a mocking voice piped up. "Well, if it isn't our class beauty, Daniella Shaw!"
The speaker was a flashy woman dressed head-to-toe in designer brands, hanging on the arm of a greasy-looking middle-aged guy.
Her dress was so short that it barely covered anything, and every time she moved, you could see her underwear.
"Myra? Long time no see," Daniella said, pulling her mask tighter over her face.
"Yeah, it's been a while. What are you doing at Holy Pharmaceutical? You know the stuff here isn't cheap, right?" Myra said, giving Daniella and Allan a scan over.
In Myra's eyes, they looked penniless.
Daniella's clothes were shabby, and Allan looked just as broke after coming out of Prison Zero, where all he did was train and study.
"We're just looking around," Daniella mumbled, knowing Allan had just gotten out and probably had no money.
"Can't afford it, huh?" Myra sneered.
"Babe, this is that class beauty I told you about, whose face got ruined by acid," Myra said, snuggling up to the greasy guy and dripping with sarcasm.
"What a waste! She's got a nice body, but has to keep her face covered," the man leered.
"Wow, you sure have high standards. Still thinking about women like her?" Myra teased.
"You're good. I got you some new white and black stockings. Make sure you wear them tonight, and be extra naughty," he said, smacking her on the butt.
Myra shot Daniella a smug, challenging look while Daniella bit her lip, feeling humiliated.
"Hey Daniella, my husband likes your body. How about you spend the night with him, and I'll pay for whatever you buy here today," Myra said, her voice full of contempt.
"You're disgusting, Myra!" Daniella snapped.
"Disgusting? Please. Look at the guy you're with. His clothes aren't even as nice as my maid's," Myra said, pointing at Allan.
"Not everyone's as lucky as me. My husband gives me 20,000 a month. I can't even spend it all!" Myra bragged, making the people around them snicker.
Daniella's face turned beet red, but she couldn't let anyone talk trash about Allan.
She was about to snap back at Myra, but Allan reached out and gently stopped her.
