"I gave you a chance, but you didn't appreciate it. So don't blame me for what happens next."
After finishing his cigarette, Pierce pulled out his old-school Nokia phone to call Dante Green.
When he was buying cigarettes earlier, Pierce had already reached out to Dante. Kailey Hill had given him a heads-up, and while coming in for his interview, Pierce decided to take a look around the company. After all, Navy Technology was now part of his business, so he figured he should keep an eye on it.
But to his surprise, Ailee and Hogan were making things hard for him, having already teamed up with the HR manager, Lionel. This toxic behavior had to be stopped.
Navy Technology was Pierce's company, not some place for shady dealings.
"Ha! Give me a chance? Did the prison fry your brain? Who gave an ex-prisoner like you the guts to talk to me like that?"
Lionel picked up the phone, ready to call for help.
The door creaked open, and in rushed a bald, middle-aged man.
"Mr. Green!" Lionel jumped and rushed over to greet him.
But Dante didn't even give Lionel a second look.
He went straight to Pierce.
"Mr. Jackson, I'm so sorry for keeping you waiting. The traffic was terrible. My apologies."
Dante had seen Pierce's photo when Navy Technology was transferred to him yesterday. Kailey had briefed Dante about him.
"No worries, I just got here myself." Pierce extended his hand for a light handshake, his gaze drifting to Lionel.
Instantly, Lionel's face went pale, sweat popping out on his forehead.
He was stunned. Did Pierce know Dante?
Dante was all smiles.
"Mr. Jackson, you should've said you knew Mr. Green." Lionel tried to recover quickly.
"I still prefer you with the arrogant attitude. Keep calling me an ex-prisoner. It feels more familiar." Pierce cut him off.
Was this what power did?
The arrogant Lionel immediately became timid after seeing Dante.
"What? Really?" Dante exploded.
He wasn't naive. He knew how things worked in the office, and this sort of thing happened all the time. As long as it wasn't a big deal, he'd usually just let it slide.
Employees worked for money, but the people at the top were addicted to power.
Unfortunately for Lionel, he had provoked Pierce.
Whether Pierce was an ex-prisoner or not didn't matter to Dante. Pierce was now his boss.
"Mr. Green, no, I..."
"Lionel, you're fired. Pack your personal belongings and leave the company within an hour. This month's salary and dismissal compensation will be transferred to your account next month."
Dante had to show his stance in front of Pierce.
"Mr. Green..."
"Get out!" Dante's eyes widened.
"You have one hour. Don't make me have security throw you out!"
Lionel looked at Pierce, who was smiling at him.
"Mr. Jackson, would you mind coming to my office for a while?"
Dante's attitude was starkly different from his execution of Lionel.
He was all smiles, his posture involuntarily lowering.
"Sure, lead the way." Pierce nodded, not sparing Lionel another glance, leaving with Dante.
Though Dante was the apparent head of Navy Technology, he was very low-key.
His office was the same size as Lionel's, except that the interview area was a reception area.
"Mr. Jackson, are you here to check the accounts or for personnel changes?" Saying this, Dante took out the account books and the company seal.
"No need." Pierce thought for a moment.
"I'm here to apply for a job. Can you arrange a position for me?"
"Mr. Jackson, you must be joking. The company is yours. Why do you need a position? You are the boss. I'm your assistant."
"No, just arrange an ordinary position for me." Pierce shook his head, decisively refusing.
He needed to keep a low profile.
First, it'd help him blend in and spot any problems that needed fixing.
Second, it'd reassure his parents. Without a job, they'd worry.
Third, it'd let him monitor the employees.
"Mr. Jackson, are you planning to go undercover?"
Seeing that Pierce wasn't joking, Dante continued, "Which department would you like to join?"
"Which department has the most flexible working hours?" Pierce just wanted a job, not something that would tie him down.
He needed more time to get even with Estella.
Once things settled down, he'd pay back the kindness from the past three years and get revenge for the crap he'd put up with.
"That'd be the sales department," Dante replied.
"Salespeople don't have to clock in. It depends on their performances. But if they don't hit their sales targets, they only get the base salary, about three thousand."
"Alright, I'll join the sales team. Let the sales manager know I'm coming, but don't tell anyone who I am. You're still the boss." Pierce agreed readily.
He didn't plan to make things difficult for Ailee and Hogan, deciding to observe them further.
After all, Ailee was still his cousin. He respected his uncle.
"Alright, please wait a moment. I'll have the sales manager come over." Dante said.
In less than three minutes, a tall woman walked in.
Pierce immediately stood up, stunned by her appearance at first glance.
She was tall, with porcelain skin and a perfect oval face.
Her eyes sparkled like gems, but those bold red lips made her look fierce and a little unapproachable.
"Mr. Green, what can I do for you?" The woman only glanced at Pierce before turning her attention to Dante.
"Annalise, this is your new employee, Pierce Jackson. He's a distant cousin of mine. Can you show him the ropes?"
Dante made an excuse, feeling slightly relieved when Pierce didn't object.
"A relative?" Annalise frowned, feeling resistant.
"Hello, Ms. Annalise, I'm Pierce Jackson." Pierce extended his hand with a slight smile.
"Hello." Annalise nodded slightly, but her tightly furrowed brows didn't relax.
"Mr. Green, I'll take him on for now, but you know my rules. If he misses his sales targets three months in a row, I won't go easy on him."
Dante was troubled. He wasn't sure about Pierce's work capability.
"If you're not okay with that, I'm out," Annalise said flatly.
She hated dealing with new hires, especially the ones with connections. They were always the toughest.
"She's got guts," Pierce thought, raising an eyebrow in admiration.
"Deal. If I don't hit my target, I'll quit," Pierce said, saving Dante from any more awkwardness.
