"I don't care what your relationship with Mr. Green is. In the sales department, you reap what you sow."
In the elevator, Annalise had a commanding expression.
"I'm giving you three months. If you haven't hit your sales target by then, you leave."
"Got it."
Pierce wasn't annoyed. He respected Annalise's no-nonsense, decisive style.
It's fine for a company to have some personal connections, but you can't run a business on favoritism alone.
Annalise was more like a battle-hardened general, always out expanding her territory.
"Ms. Annalise, let me get your bag."
Pierce offered to take Annalise's bag. "I was hoping you could show me the ropes and share some sales tips."
"I like your attitude."
Annalise glanced at Pierce, a hint of surprise in her eyes.
Usually, people who have connections are a pain to deal with. Pierce's abilities were still a question mark, but at least he had the right attitude. His eyes were clear, not like most guys who couldn't stop staring at her chest or her ass.
"First, come with me to the sales department's weekly morning meeting. After the meeting, I'll give you some basic tasks. As for sales tips, we'll cover them as we go."
Annalise checked her watch just as the elevator doors slid open and strode out confidently.
Pierce hurried to follow.
On the way, plenty of people greeted Annalise. She was well-respected here. Everyone made way for her down the hall.
The sales department was on the first floor, a spacious office over a hundred square meters. On either side were two rooms, one a small meeting room, and the other Annalise's private office.
"Morning, everyone."
Annalise walked in, her face lit with a confident, attractive smile.
"Morning, Ms. Annalise."
As soon as Annalise walked in, everyone clapped and greeted her together.
"Alright, quiet down. Before we start, I want to introduce our new team member." Annalise called out toward the door, "Come on in."
"This is Pierce Jackson, our new teammate. Let's help each other out, grow together, and make some money together."
"Alright!"
The room burst into applause, though two people looked less than thrilled.
Ailee shot Hogan a confused look from across the room.
Wasn't this all supposed to be taken care of?
How did Pierce get hired?
Hogan looked just as baffled, giving a helpless shrug.
Pierce caught their exchange, but didn't care what they thought. He introduced himself to the group with confidence.
Annalise spent a few more minutes introducing the sales department members to Pierce.
The sales department was small. There were only eight people. Kevin, in his forties, was a sales powerhouse. His performance was second only to Annalise. He led Sales Team One, which had one other member: Dorothy, a woman in her thirties.
Sales Team Two was led by Ailee, with Hogan as her team member.
Sales Team Three was Ronan, a guy in his fifties whose numbers were consistently at the bottom.
Since Pierce was a newcomer, he was assigned to Sales Team Three, but for the first three months, Annalise would mentor him. Once he got the hang of things, Ronan would take over as his supervisor.
After the introductions, the meeting began.
Annalise didn't waste any time. She handed her bag to Pierce, then pulled out seven thick stacks of cash.
"One for each. Spend it wisely."
"Yahoo!"
"Long live Ms. Annalise!"
Seeing the money, everyone's smiles grew even wider.
"Pierce, you just joined today, and it was last-minute. The money will be sent to you on your phone."
Although Annalise didn't see any displeasure in Pierce's eyes, even though he'd joined the sales department less than an hour ago, she insisted on giving him a bonus.
"Ms. Annalise, I don't think that's right. I just got here and I'm already getting a bonus. It doesn't feel right," Pierce said, clearly surprised, shaking his head.
"A man should never say he can't do it!"
Annalise raised an eyebrow, her sharp gaze fixed on Pierce.
"Especially not to me."
"Well..."
"I'll send it to you. Add me on WhatsApp."
Ding!
Seeing he couldn't win this argument, Pierce just shrugged and accepted the one grand.
"Get off an hour early today and go buy yourself some new clothes. In sales, you've got to look sharp." Annalise put away her phone. "You're part of the sales department, of course, you get a bonus."
"I don't like beating around the bush. We're all here for the money. I care about results. As long as you hit your numbers, I don't care what else you do."
"Alright, let's start the meeting!"
Without giving Pierce a chance to speak, Annalise waved her hand and started her summary of the previous week's sales and laid out the plan for the week ahead.
"Alright, people. Let's crush it! Whoever's top seller this month, I'll give a two-grand bonus!"
"Ms. Annalise, you're awesome!"
"Ms. Annalise, I adore you!"
As soon as she finished, the room burst into chaos again. Sitting in the corner, Pierce couldn't help but admire Annalise. She was tough and commanding, but she understood people better than anyone.
Having an employee like her was a real asset for Navy Technology and Pierce.
"Alright, enough with the flattering. Get some clients! Move, move, move!"
Amidst laughter and teasing, everyone dispersed, leaving just Pierce and Annalise.
"There are plenty of empty desks. Pick any open spot. Here's some company info. Please read it all before you leave. The important stuff's already highlighted."
Annalise tossed a stack of documents to Pierce, clapped her hands, and said, "Whether you stick around or not is up to you. Starting tomorrow, you're coming out with me to meet clients."
"Even if you have to pull an all-nighter, finish those docs. That's it!"
Without giving Pierce a chance to respond, Annalise grabbed her bag and hurried out.
"Man, this one grand isn't easy to earn after all."
Pierce looked at the mountain of paperwork. He felt like studying for the SATs. He shook his head, but got to work anyway. He didn't need these docs to do his job, but they'd help him get to know Navy Technology better.
Suddenly, his ears started burning.
"Who's talking shit about me behind my back?"
Pierce muttered.
"What happened?"
Meanwhile, in a Mercedes leaving Navy Technology, Ailee frowned, looking pissed.
"Didn't you say it was settled? How did Pierce not only get hired but also end up in the sales department?"
"I have no clue!"
Hogan's face darkened. "Hold on, I'll make a call and find out."
Hogan pulled over and called Lionel.
"Hey Lionel, what's up with that ex-con? I thought we had a deal."
"Hogan, you son of a bitch!"
"Get the hell out of here!"
Before Hogan could say another word, Lionel exploded on the other end. His yelling was so loud, even Ailee could hear every word.
Hogan was left speechless.
