"Huh?"
Pierce stood there, stunned, watching as the door shut.
"Uncle Pierce, just remember to come home tonight."
"You'd better keep quiet. It's fine if you don't come back."
Hearing the conversation between Elena and Dallas inside, Pierce felt even more confused.
Still, compared to before, he felt a bit warmer inside.
"Ahem, sorry, they don't know."
"No need to explain, Mr. Pierce. Please get in the car."
Kailey Hill, poised and graceful, invited Pierce into a luxurious two-tone Maybach.
"Mr. Pierce, it's still a bit early for dinner. How about we stop by a cafe?"
"Sure."
Pierce nodded, gazing out the window as the scenery passed by, lost in thought.
At the cafe, Kailey booked a private room.
"Mr. Pierce, I'll get straight to the point." Before the coffee arrived, Kailey handed Pierce a folder. "Thank you for saving my grandpa. This is just a small token of our gratitude."
"Navy Technology? You're giving me the company?"
Pierce glanced at it, then couldn't help but study Kailey.
Navy Technology was worth several hundred million.
"There's also a bank card inside. It's not much. Please, take it. Otherwise, I won't be able to explain it to my grandpa. He'll scold me to death."
Before Pierce could say no, Kailey started acting pitiful to guilt-trip him.
"Alright, I'll accept the company, but I can't take the money."
Saying this, Pierce handed the bank card right back to her.
"Mr. Pierce, are you trying to get me scolded by my grandpa? I was already reprimanded once for underestimating you."
Kailey put on her best puppy-dog eyes.
"No, I never take money for treating people."
Pierce shook his head firmly. "That's just a rule I made for myself. I can't break it."
"Never take money for treatment?"
"Never."
"Alright then."
Seeing Pierce was serious, Kailey didn't insist. They chatted for a bit until Kailey got a call and had to leave first, so dinner would have to wait.
Pierce wasn't bothered about missing a meal. He wanted to find Estella to get some answers. However, as he left the cafe, it was almost dark, and he had promised his father to visit his uncle.
"Why are you back? Where's that girl?"
When Pierce came home, Elena poked her head out, looking around, clearly disappointed.
"Uncle, did you lose your girlfriend?"
Dallas piped up, teasing him.
"Mom, don't overthink it. I just met her. We're not a couple. I helped her, and she came over to thank me."
Pierce could only shake his head and laugh helplessly.
"It doesn't matter if she's not your girlfriend. Honestly, I like Nancy. She's pretty, kind, and always so gentle when she talks. If it wasn't for her, who knows what would have happened to Dallas..."
Thinking of her beloved grandson's illness, Elena's eyes welled up.
"Alright, that's enough. Let's not talk about this in front of the kid."
At this moment, Arthur came out from the inner room, carrying fruit in one hand and leaning on a cane with the other. "Pierce, let's go. Your uncle should be off work by now."
"Okay."
Pierce quickly put the folder away, grabbed the bag of fruit from his father, and helped him out the door.
To save some money, they walked instead of taking a cab, chatting as they went.
"Dad, there's something I want to tell you."
Pierce hesitated for a moment before speaking up.
"What is it? Go ahead."
"Dallas isn't sick. He's been poisoned."
"Poisoned? How do you know?"
Arthur's brow furrowed. "I thought he had leukemia."
Pierce shook his head. "Dad, I'm a doctor. The moment I saw Dallas, I felt something was off. I spent some time with him this afternoon and confirmed it. He's been affected by Blood Mold Toxin. It's a scarce kind of poison!"
"Since when are you a doctor?"
Arthur looked at his son skeptically. "Weren't you in jail for three years without even a college degree?"
"Dad, I wasn't really in jail. Although I spent three years in prison, I was a prison officer, responsible for overseeing inmates. During that time, I apprenticed under a highly skilled medical expert and studied medicine for three years."
Pierce decided not to hide the truth from his parents but mentioned nothing about Tenent.
"You've probably seen on TV that prisons house thousands of inmates under poor living conditions, with all sorts of illnesses, so I had plenty of opportunities to practice."
"I plan to reopen the Jackson Clinic soon."
"Is everything you said true?"
Arthur was visibly moved.
"Of course it's true. When have I ever lied to you?"
"As long as you weren't in jail, that's good."
Arthur's eyes glistened with tears as he patted his son's shoulder firmly, his tone softening. "We'll talk about reopening the clinic later. You didn't even finish college, and you don't have a medical license. I'm barely qualified myself. We can't mess up the Jackson family's reputation. Besides, we don't have the money right now."
"The priority is for you to find a job first. Once you're stable, your mom and I can help you find a match. Without money, which girl would want you?"
"Alright, alright, I'll listen to you."
Pierce didn't argue, knowing some things couldn't be fully disclosed for fear of overwhelming his parents.
After walking for nearly half an hour, they finally arrived at the Sunshine District, a posh, upscale neighborhood.
Arthur rang the doorbell.
"Who's there? Coming!"
A woman's voice came from inside. It was Pierce's aunt, Rosemary.
"Rosemary, it's me, Arthur."
Arthur forced a big smile and even bowed a little, looking downright humble.
Seeing this, Pierce felt a pang in his heart.
"You here to ask for money again?"
Upon opening the door and seeing Arthur, Rosemary couldn't hide her disdain and showed no intention of inviting them in.
"No."
Arthur waved his hand repeatedly. "We're just here to visit. Pierce just got out today, so I wanted to bring him over."
"Hello, Aunt Rosemary." Pierce quickly greeted her.
"Weren't you supposed to do five years? How come you're out already? You didn't break out of jail, did you?"
Rosemary immediately became suspicious and looked as though she was about to slam the door shut.
"Aunt Rosemary, I..."
"Do you have to talk like that?"
At this moment, a stern male voice came from inside, and then Zachary Jackson appeared.
"What kind of person do you think Pierce is? He'd never do something like that."
"If he were such a good guy, would he have ended up in jail?"
Rosemary scoffed, turning away without inviting them in.
Arthur stood there, embarrassed and not knowing what to do, while Pierce just frowned a little, not looking upset.
