"Uncle Pierce, I missed you so much."
At the school gate, Dallas threw himself into Pierce's arms, his little pale face covered in tear stains.
"Dallas, it's me. Hmm?"
But as Pierce lifted Dallas, something felt off.
According to his mother, Dallas was said to have leukemia and had already been through several rounds of chemotherapy. However, Pierce sensed toxins in Dallas's body.
What was going on?
"Uncle Pierce, you're not leaving again this time, right?"
Dallas hugged Pierce tightly around the neck, tears welling up in his eyes.
When Pierce went to jail years ago, Dallas wasn't even four yet, but he already had memories and was closest to Pierce. Seeing him again filled his heart with joy.
"I'm not leaving, I promise. From now on, as long as I'm here, nobody's going to bully you."
Turning to Lilith, whose eyes were a bit red, Pierce said, "Ms. Lilith, can I take Dallas home for the afternoon?"
"Yes, of course."
Lilith agreed right away. She wasn't naive. Although she had brought Dallas downstairs, she'd heard all the commotion in the principal's office upstairs, and she'd seen the thugs kneeling in the hallway.
Who would dare mess with someone who could make the gangs kneel?
Even though Dallas was in poor health, he always worked hard and was polite. What teacher wouldn't like a student like him?
"Thank you, Ms. Lilith. Goodbye."
Dallas waved at Lilith and left with Pierce.
Because of Dallas's health, Pierce didn't dare buy him any random snacks. He hailed a taxi, and the two of them returned to Harmony Residence. When they got home, Arthur Jackson, Pierce's father, was already back.
"Dad..."
As Pierce started to speak, his throat tightened, and he couldn't get a word out.
Arthur was just over fifty, but he looked small and frail, with a head of gray hair and a limp in his right leg, leaning on a cane. It was heartbreaking to see.
"It's good you're back."
Arthur's eyes were red as he patted Pierce hard on the arm.
"Let's eat. Since Pierce is back, we'll have something special."
At that moment, Elena brought out the food. The four of them sat down.
Pierce almost couldn't hold back his tears.
"Your mom said you went out looking for a job?"
Arthur looked at his son.
Pierce nodded.
If he wanted, there were plenty of people who'd pay a fortune to have him treat them.
Honestly, looking for a job was the last thing on his mind. What he wanted was to confront Estella.
How did she get pregnant?
How had she treated the Jackson family these past three years?
"I'm still looking." Pierce chewed Elena's cooking.
It tasted the same as always, but there was more bitterness in it now.
"Rest at home this afternoon. Tonight, come with me to visit your uncle."
Arthur spoke as he ate, "While you were gone these past three years, your uncle's family looked out for us. They even lent us eight thousand when Dallas got sick."
"We owe them a big favor. Even if we can't pay them back yet, we can't forget our manners."
"Plus, your cousin is doing well these days. She's in business and making money every month. She graduated from a top university and has connections. Maybe she can help you find a job."
Arthur put down his bowl and said, "Pierce, your reputation isn't so great. If you don't find a good job and save up some money, how are you going to find a wife?"
"Yes, Pierce, your father is right. Let's not dwell on the past. We need to look ahead."
Pierce felt a sting in his nose, his heart aching even more.
Why had he been so blind to get involved with Estella?
"Alright, we'll visit uncle tonight."
Even though the meal was simple, the whole family enjoyed it. Pierce noticed something. His parents didn't eat any of the meat. They gave it all to him and Dallas.
Pierce quietly made up his mind. He was determined to ensure his family had a better life.
After dinner, Arthur grabbed his cane and went out to work. Pierce helped his mother with the dishes, then played in the yard with Dallas. While they were playing, Pierce became certain.
Dallas didn't have leukemia. He'd been poisoned. It was a rare poison, Blood Mold Toxin.
"Who poisoned him? And why target such a young child?"
Knock! Knock!
Just as Pierce was lost in thought, there was a knock at the door.
"Who is it? Debt collectors?"
When Elena heard the knock, she froze, fear written all over her face.
"Pierce, quick, take Dallas and hide under the bed! They won't do anything to an old lady like me. Go, hurry!"
Dallas instinctively clung to Pierce, making Pierce's heart ache.
How had his parents managed to get through these past three years?
"Excuse me, is Mr. Pierce Jackson here?"
A pleasant woman's voice came from outside.
Pierce frowned. The voice sounded familiar.
"Hmm?"
Elena was surprised too and turned to look at Pierce.
The door creaked open, and standing outside was a tall, stylishly dressed woman who took Elena by surprise.
"Hello. Is Pierce Jackson home?"
The woman gave Elena a polite nod, glancing into the yard.
"Pierce, someone's here for you."
Elena called out to Pierce and quickly invited the woman in.
"Dallas, pour some water for the pretty lady."
"Okay."
Once they realized the woman wasn't a debt collector, Elena and Dallas relaxed, secretly happy that such a pretty woman had come to see Pierce.
"Here you go, pretty lady. Have some water."
Dallas handed her the water.
"Thank you. You're so well-behaved." The woman smiled warmly.
Even though it was just a glass of plain water, it felt special.
"You're welcome."
Dallas looked up at her, "Pretty lady, can I ask you something?"
"What is it? Go ahead."
"Are you my uncle's girlfriend?"
The woman blushed, taken aback.
"Ahem, kids say the funniest things. Don't mind him," Pierce cleared his throat and turned to her.
"Ms. Hill, is there something you wanted?"
The woman was Kailey Hill, whom he'd run into just a few hours earlier. Pierce knew why she was here, but he hadn't expected Dallas to blurt that out.
"Mr. Pierce, I just wanted to thank you, and also invite you to dinner. Are you free?" Kailey asked.
"He's free! You should take him out. He doesn't have a job, and he doesn't have a girlfriend either!"
Before Pierce could say anything, Dallas pushed him right out the door.
