"You-you, go easy. It's my first time…"
"Who isn't a first-timer? I'm saving your life. Bear with it."
"Pervert."
…
On the outskirts of Zerton, atop Woflie Mountain.
Inside a Mercedes SUV, the air was thick with heat.
Maria Scurr, the woman everyone called Zerton's number one beauty CEO, was living through the most mortifying moment of her life. She lay facedown on the broad leather seat, letting the man behind her do as he pleased, her face burning scarlet.
It hurt, and it thrilled her in a way that made her dizzy.
She had come up the mountain with her driver to survey a site. The engine stalled. When she got out to check, a venomous snake came out of nowhere and bit her. At first it was only numbness. Within minutes, a block of ice seemed to sink into her lower belly.
Of course, Woflie Mountain had awful reception. She could not get a call through.
In the end she sent the driver down the mountain to find help and waited where she was.
That was when the man showed up out of thin air. He said the snake venom had dragged out the Frostbane in her body, and only the harmonizing of yin and yang could save her.
After that, everything blurred. When she came back to herself, the man had already had his way with her.
Yet it was strange. In the midst of it, the cold and the pins-and-needles in her body slowly ebbed, replaced by a heat she could not name. She felt his breath on the hollow of her neck, hot enough to set her nerves on edge. Even so, her body softened, traitorous and honest. He kept insisting he was treating her, and in the end Maria let him be.
She had no idea how long it lasted. Just as she was about to black out again, the man finally stopped. He sat on the adjacent seat with his back to her and began to put his clothes in order.
Maria hurried to button her blouse and smooth her skirt, cheeks pale and flushed by turns. She took a long breath, pulled a thick stack of cash from her leather bag, and slapped it onto the passenger seat with a sharp smack.
"That's fifty thousand. Consider it your fee."
Her voice had the crisp chill she used in boardrooms, even a touch of deliberate frost.
"Today never happened. Let's never meet again."
Asher Jauncy stared at the money, at a loss.
Did this woman take him for a gigolo?
Still, she was generous. Fifty grand for one time?
So she was a rich lady.
He smiled and said earnestly, "Miss, keep the money. It's a pity, really. I already have a fiancée. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind making you my wife."
Maria almost laughed from sheer anger. She was the sole heiress of the Scurr family in Zerton, a CEO managing assets in the tens of billions, and he, some drifter out of nowhere, thought she needed him to take responsibility?
If he had not just saved her life, the Scurr family could have buried him for what he had done.
And he dared to say he wouldn't mind marrying her?
"Worry about yourself first," she said coolly. "If you breathe a word about today, the Scurr family won't let you off."
Asher watched her struggle back into her clothes. His tone shifted, steady and serious.
"The Frostbane in your body only eased by half. In three days, you'll need another round of treatment. Otherwise, the next flare will be worse. If you want me, come to the Yale family in Zerton. My name is Asher Jauncy."
He opened the door and climbed out. With an old canvas pack slung over his shoulder, he headed down the mountain without looking back.
If she did not want him to take responsibility, he had no intention of delaying real business. He was going down to fulfill his betrothal to Juliana Yale. His master had made him promise before ascending, calling it a trial in the mortal world he had to complete.
Maria sat in the car and watched his figure vanish around a bend in the mountain road. Her thoughts churned in a way she could not control. She picked up her phone to call her grandfather, Murphy Scurr. Just as the screen lit up, a deep thrum, thrum, thrum rolled in from the distance.
She looked up. A helicopter was bearing down on their position. It settled onto a nearby clearing.
The cabin door swung open. An elderly man in a Zhongshan suit, hair graying but stride brisk, jumped out first. It was her grandfather, Murphy Scurr. Behind him came an old man in a white coat with reading glasses and a dozen bodyguards in black suits.
"Maria! Are you alright?" Murphy hurried over. Seeing her in the car with a touch of pallor still on her face, he yanked the door open.
"I got a distress call from the driver saying you were bitten by a snake. I had the chopper bring Doctor Dillon Shirvinton right away."
The old man in the lab coat was Jenith's foremost miracle doctor, Dillon Shirvinton. Before Murphy finished, he was already at the door.
"Miss Scurr, give me your wrist. Quickly, let me take your pulse. Banded Krait venom kills. We cannot waste time."
Maria felt almost back to normal, but at his words she still extended her hand.
Dillon set his fingertips to her wrist. His eyes slowly widened. He switched to the other wrist. His brows knotted, smoothed, then knotted again. He murmured under his breath as he checked, and Murphy's heart climbed into his throat.
"Doctor Shirvinton, how is she? Is Maria alright?" Murphy could not help himself. Maria was the Scurr family's only seedling. If anything happened to her, the sky would fall.
Dillon lifted his head, looking at Murphy. His voice trembled.
"Sir Scurr… it is a miracle. The Banded Krait venom is completely cleared. Even the Frostbane that has tormented her for more than ten years has receded by more than half. I was worried she would not pull through. Her pulse is steady."
"Really?" Murphy grabbed Dillon's arm, eyes bright. "Even you couldn't do anything about that Frostbane. How did it suddenly recede?"
As a child, Maria had fallen into the Frostpool and contracted Frostbane. The best doctors at home and abroad had failed. It had been Murphy's greatest burden for years. And now it was easing for no reason?
He was elated and baffled all at once.
Dillon's expression shifted. He leaned in close and lowered his voice.
"Sir Scurr, if you look carefully at Miss Maria's condition… I am afraid someone has already taken her."
"Who? Who dared lay a hand on our Maria?" The joy vanished from Murphy's face, replaced in a flash by rage.
Dillon's next words made his expression change again.
"Sir Scurr, this was a good breaking. Frostbane is pure yin. For it to ease so quickly, she must have harmonized yin and yang with a man who has a Sun-borne Physique. If that man continues the treatment, Miss Maria will not have to suffer Frostbane's torment again."
Murphy blinked, then suddenly laughed out loud and slapped his thigh.
"That is wonderful. What is a broken maidenhood compared to her health? If it cures her, we can marry her to him."
He threw his head back and laughed, then clutched his granddaughter's hand.
"Maria, tell Grandpa. Where is my good grandson-in-law?"
"He…" Maria's cheeks flamed. That roguish, handsome face rose unbidden in her mind.
