Maria Scurr repeated Asher Jauncy's words, even mentioning the follow-up treatment he had scheduled three days later.
Murphy Scurr rubbed his chin, his eyes lighting up. "My god! To size up your condition at a glance and treat it-this young man is no ordinary talent!"
"Maria, come with me to the Yale family right now and thank him properly. Who knows, this might be the Scurr family's stroke of fortune!"
Maria watched her grandfather getting all worked up and couldn't help rolling her eyes. But she remembered the focused look in Asher's eyes when he applied the ointment, and an inexplicable smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
By then, Asher had already arrived at the Yale family's villa.
The gate was ornate wrought iron, and the yard was planted with Buddhist pines taller than a person. Two imported luxury cars were parked out front-wealth on full display.
Looks like the Yale family had done well these years. They hadn't wasted my master's help.
Back then, the Yale patriarch had been gravely ill, and Asher's master, Zakiel, had passed through Zerton and saved him. To thank Zakiel, the patriarch arranged for his daughter, Juliana Yale, to be married to Asher. Fulfilling that marriage was the main reason Asher had come down from the mountain.
He pressed the doorbell. A woman's excited voice came from inside. "Young Master Zorn, you finally made it-we've all been waiting for you…"
The door swung open. A middle-aged woman in a sequined dress with a thick gold necklace poked her head out, her face creased with flattery. But when she saw Asher, her smile collapsed.
She was Juliana Yale's mother, Ruth Shayle.
"Kid, who are you? Dressed so shabby-did you knock on the wrong door?"
Ruth looked him up and down, her disdain impossible to hide.
Asher wore a coarse shirt faded from washing. The knee of his pants had a small patch. The cloth pack on his back was frayed and fuzzy. He looked completely out of place in front of a luxury villa.
He kept his tone respectful and smiled. "Ma'am, hello. I'm Asher Jauncy. I'm here to see Juliana."
"Asher Jauncy?" Ruth frowned, rummaging through her memory and coming up empty. Irritated, she shouted into the house, "Juliana! Juliana! Come out-someone's looking for you!"
Soon, a graceful figure stepped out.
Juliana wore a brand-new designer dress and delicate makeup. A limited-edition luxury bag dangled from her hand. Her hair was styled in the current big waves. She was clearly dressed to go on a date.
She froze when she saw Asher, confusion in her eyes. "Who are you? What do you want with me?"
Asher pulled a yellowed sheet of paper and a warm white jade pendant tied with a red cord from his pack and held them out. "Juliana, I'm Asher Jauncy, a disciple of Zakiel. I'm here to fulfill our marriage. Your Yale family should remember this, right?"
Ruth's face changed on the spot, and Juliana went rigid. Her bag nearly slipped from her fingers.
Juliana had, of course, heard her father's stories. When she was little, he often told her that if not for a living immortal who saved him, there would be no Yale family today. She had seen a jade pendant like the one in Asher's hand in her father's study-he'd said it was the benefactor's token.
But as the Yale family grew richer, her mother kept whispering that she had to marry into a true elite family. Juliana had long pushed those old promises out of her mind. And the man in front of her looked so poor-worlds away from the rich son-in-law she had imagined.
Ruth gathered herself first. She snatched the marriage certificate, ripped it into confetti, and scattered it at Asher's feet.
"What nonsense! That old Daoist saved us with a flick of his wrist, and you dare wave a 'marriage' around? You're a scammer trying to extort the Yale family!"
Asher's smile vanished. He could see Ruth had no intention of honoring anything.
"Ma'am, the marriage certificate was written by Mr. Yale himself, and the pendant is the token my master left. You should have the matching piece in your study. You can check."
He kept his patience, explaining.
"Check what!" Ruth flung the shredded paper at him. "Even if it exists, so what? Back then we were poor-that's why we humored you! Now our Juliana is marrying the eldest young master of the Zorn family, one of the Four Major Families of Zerton. What are you? You think you deserve to bring up a marriage to her?"
Juliana tightened her grip on her bag. Though a touch guilty, she looked at Asher's shabby clothes, then thought of Young Master Zorn's generosity, and lifted her chin in scorn. "Yeah, get out of here! I don't know you or your so-called marriage! I'm Young Master Zorn's girlfriend. Don't ruin my reputation and mess up my chance to marry into a top family!"
She paused, then shot Asher an even colder look. "Dressed like a beggar, and you want to marry me? Dream on. Even if every man in Zerton dropped dead, I still wouldn't marry you!"
Seeing her daughter back her up, Ruth grew more smug. She took out a bank card and tossed it at Asher's feet.
"There's $500 in it-enough for your round trip. Take the money and get lost. If I see you again, I'll have security throw you out!"
She could not let a nobody like Asher ruin her daughter's shot at the high life.
"Heh. So that's how it is." Asher finally saw the pair for who they were. His expression turned cold. "The Yale family, in my eyes, was nothing but chickens and dogs. If not for the marriage binding me, you'd know your place-you'd be ants staring up at the heavens."
"Outrageous!" Ruth roared. "Asher Jauncy, watch your mouth! The Yale family is worth over $10 million. How could a bastard like you dare humiliate us? Someone!"
A few community security guards hurried over, all eager smiles. "Ms. Shayle, do you need help?"
Ruth pointed imperiously at Asher. "This punk trespassed on our property. Get him out!"
"On it!" Two guards moved in to pin Asher.
A shard of cold light flashed through Asher's eyes.
Just then, a roar sounded from down the street. A fleet of more than ten luxury cars pulled up and stopped right in front of Asher.
An old man and a young woman stepped out.
"That… that's Mr. Scurr Sr. of the Scurr family!"
"My god! The head of Zerton's first family actually came to the Yale residence. Honey, we've made it!"
At the sight of Murphy Scurr, Ruth grew so excited she could barely speak.
"Beside Mr. Scurr Sr.-is that Zerton's number one beauty, Maria Scurr? My god, she's stunning."
Juliana was thrilled as well. Among Zerton's younger generation, who didn't know Maria Scurr? She was the goddess in every young elite's heart. Even someone as proud as Juliana felt shabby in front of her.
Mother and daughter rushed up, smiling more obsequiously than the guards.
"Mr. Scurr Sr., what brings you to our Yale home!"
Maria ignored them. She pointed at Asher. "Grandpa, the person from the car was him."
Murphy Scurr looked at Asher, then at Ruth and Juliana, unsure of their relationship. "Mrs. Yale, what is this young man to your family?"
He did not dare be careless and kept his tone very cordial toward Ruth.
Ruth immediately assumed Mr. Scurr Sr. disliked Asher's shabby look and rushed to distance themselves. "Mr. Scurr Sr., he's just a con artist trying to mooch off us. He has nothing to do with the Yale family.
"You lot-what are you even paid for? Hurry up and haul him out, so his poverty stench doesn't offend Mr. Scurr Sr.!"
Murphy Scurr's face darkened at once.
Thinking he was angry, Juliana panicked and shrieked, "Asher, get out! If we offend Mr. Scurr because of you, killing you wouldn't be enough to make up for it!"
"Outrageous!" Murphy Scurr barked, then strode up to Asher. He bent slightly at the waist and spoke with deep respect. "I am Murphy Scurr, here to pay my respects to Mr. Jauncy."
Boom!
Ruth and Juliana were completely dumbstruck.
The head of Zerton's first family bowed to a nobody?
Even more jaw-dropping, faced with such deference, Asher only drawled, "And you are?"
