"Mr. Scurr-sir! What are you doing?"
Ruth Shayle was the first to react, her voice shaking. "This kid is a con man. Don't let him fool you!"
"Asher! Why didn't you say you knew Mr. Scurr?"
Juliana Yale snapped out of her earlier contempt, hurried over in two quick strides, grabbed Asher Jauncy's arm, and forced a smile uglier than a sob onto her face.
"Mr. Scurr, we were just joking. Asher and our Yale family are very close. He's my fiancé, isn't that right, Asher?"
She didn't know how Asher had won Mr. Scurr's favor, but she was certain that as long as Asher acknowledged their relationship, Mr. Scurr would look at the Yale family differently. Maybe they could even get a line into the Scurr family-far better than marrying into the Zorn family.
After all, everyone knew the Scurr family ruled Zerton.
Juliana had thought a beauty like her only needed to flirt a little to wrap Asher around her finger. She hadn't expected Asher to act like he didn't even see her. He let out a cold laugh. "Fiancé? I couldn't climb that high. Who was it just now saying I was a toad trying to eat swan meat?"
Juliana's face flared scarlet, and she couldn't get a single word out.
Ruth realized things had gone sideways and rushed up to smooth it over. "Asher! Don't talk nonsense! Juliana was teasing you. She's got a childish temper-don't take it to heart. We have an engagement."
"Engagement?"
Asher snorted, his gaze sliding over the scraps of the marriage certificate that still hadn't been swept up.
"When you tore up the marriage certificate, why didn't you say 'engagement'? Now that you think I might benefit you, suddenly the engagement is back? You Yales have skin thicker than city walls."
"From the moment you ripped that certificate, I, Asher Jauncy, had nothing to do with the Yale family. Don't bring up the engagement again. It disgusts me."
The words hit like slaps, one after another, stinging Ruth and Juliana across the face.
Ruth's expression turned into a color palette, flushing red then blanching white. She wanted to curse him, but didn't dare. Murphy Scurr was right there watching. She had no choice but to choke the fury back down.
Juliana's eyes went red-she wasn't feeling wronged; she was panicking. She knew if they missed this chance, the Yales might not just fail to climb higher-they might not even keep what they had. She clutched Asher's jacket hem, her voice wobbling. "Asher, I was wrong. I shouldn't have said those things. We can still talk about the engagement. Please don't tell Mr. Scurr we have nothing to do with each other, okay?"
Asher flicked her hand off and took a step back, opening space between them, the disgust in his eyes plain.
Just then, Maria Scurr, who had been standing beside Murphy Scurr, stepped forward.
She wore the same business attire as that morning, a faint blush warming her cheeks, her eyes fixed steadily on Asher. "Asher."
Her voice held a thread of gentleness. "Thank you for saving me today. Since your engagement has been canceled, then…"
She drew in a deep breath, as if steeling herself. "If you don't mind, I'd like to give us a try. From now on, your matters are my matters."
The room went dead silent.
Ruth and Juliana gaped like they'd seen a ghost.
They had never imagined that Maria Scurr-Zerton's number-one beauty CEO, who oversaw a fortune in the billions-would confess to Asher of her own accord. She was the woman countless elite heirs couldn't even get close to.
Murphy Scurr's face broke into an approving smile. He raised his voice, excited. "Good! Well said, Maria!"
"Mr. Jauncy, the Scurr family might not be top-tier, but we have some standing in Zerton. Maria is my only granddaughter. I entrust her to you. From today, you are my grandson-in-law. Whoever dares bully you is opposing me, Murphy Scurr!"
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number, his tone turning hard. "Zhang, issue the order immediately: terminate every cooperation project with the Yale family. And notify every company in Zerton that deals with the Yales-anyone who keeps doing business with them is making an enemy of the Scurr family. Also, have the banks tighten the Yales' loans. I want the Yale family bankrupt within three days."
"Mr. Scurr!" Juliana screamed. She lunged to grab his arm, but a bodyguard blocked her.
"You can't do that! We have no feud with the Scurr family. How can you blacklist us because of Asher?"
Ruth collapsed to the floor, wailing. "Mr. Scurr, please, spare us! We know we were wrong. Please let the Yale family go. We'll kowtow to you!"
She was about to bang her head on the ground when the guards hauled her back up.
Asher watched the mother and daughter's spectacle and felt no sympathy.
He nodded to Murphy Scurr. "Sorry to trouble you, Mr. Scurr."
"No trouble, no trouble!" Murphy waved it off, then extended a warm invitation. "Mr. Jauncy, Maria's Frostbane still needs conditioning. Why not come back to our estate with us first and let us play host?"
Maria looked at Asher too, expectation bright in her eyes.
Asher thought it over. He had come down the mountain to temper himself; it was all the same where he went. And Maria's Frostbane did need further care. He agreed. "All right."
Murphy's face lit up. He personally opened the door of a nearby Rolls-Royce. "Please, Mr. Jauncy."
Maria got in too, taking the seat beside Asher.
The convoy pulled away from the Yale villa, leaving Ruth and Juliana crumbling where they stood.
"Mom! What do we do? If the Scurr family blacklists us, the Yale family is really finished!"
Juliana clung to Ruth's arm, sobbing, her carefully applied makeup in ruins.
Ruth panicked too. She wiped her tears, then suddenly remembered something, her eyes brightening. "Right! Juliana, don't you know Harris Zorn, the Zorn family's eldest son? The Zorns are also one of the Four Major Families of Zerton. Maybe Young Master Zorn can help us! Call him, quick!"
Juliana snapped out of it, fumbled out her phone, and hurriedly dialed Harris Zorn.
It rang several times before he picked up.
Harris Zorn's lazy drawl came through. "Juliana? What made you call me? Missing me? Tonight's Business Banquet-I'll take you to meet some big shots. I'll buy you a new bag while we're at it."
"Young Master Zorn! Please save the Yale family!" Juliana begged through tears. "The Scurr family is going to blacklist us. You have to think of something!"
Harris paused, then laughed, full of disdain. "The Scurr family? In their condition, they still dare to blacklist people? Don't panic, Juliana. Let me tell you something that'll calm you down."
"What is it? Please, tell me!"
Harris lowered his voice, savoring the gossip. "I heard Maria Scurr's childhood Frostbane was never cured. Even Dillon Shirvinton said she didn't have long to live."
Juliana's eyes went wide. "R-Really? Maria Scurr was on borrowed time?"
"Of course it's true. The other families in Zerton have been eyeing the Scurr assets for a while."
Harris sounded utterly certain, a chill threading his words. "Murphy Scurr is old. As soon as Maria dies, the Scurr family will be leaderless. Then we'll carve up their territory. At tonight's Business Banquet, our families are joining hands to move against the Scurrs. The Scurr family was about to be finished."
