The crowd rippled and parted again. Alexis Juggins came striding in, a Hermes bag at her wrist, dressed in a sharp business skirt. Two big rhinestone earrings flashed as she walked, her long legs pale and dazzling.
Wherever she passed, Juggins Group employees lowered their heads and stepped back.
Eve Balam moved up quickly. "President, please help Ander Yale."
Alexis didn't comment. Her cool gaze skimmed over Ander, then dropped to Leonard on the floor.
"So, what Ander just said-that you colluded with Benji's people and betrayed us. Is it true or not?"
"Leonard, I'm giving you one chance. If you don't tell the truth, I can promise you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
Cold sweat broke across Leonard's brow in an instant.
He knew how ruthless Alexis, once the Group's president, could be. Even his direct superior, Lydia Juggins, had lost to this favored daughter of the Juggins family before; what chance did he have?
"Ms. Juggins, I…"
He stammered.
Jack Juggins frowned. "Alexis, internal affairs of the Group are under me."
"You stepping in like this-aren't you getting in the way of my work?"
Alexis replied coolly, "So what did you find? Is Leonard a traitor to the Group?"
Jack hesitated. He wanted to say no, but Leonard already looked like he had confessed without a fight.
Alexis gave a faint, contemptuous smile and looked at Ander. "You say Leonard is a traitor. Do you have proof?"
Ander said, "Secretary Eve was there with me. She heard Zachariah admit it himself. I get the rules, though-talk is cheap."
He grabbed Leonard by the hair, ignored the man's scream, and fished the phone from his pocket.
Leonard raged, "Yale, what the hell are you doing?"
Ander cracked him across the face with a hard slap. Leonard gaped, stunned.
Seizing the moment, Ander held the phone to Leonard's face and unlocked it with Face ID.
The slick move left everyone blinking, including Alexis.
He pulled up the latest call and dialed it back.
"When Zachariah left earlier, he called Leonard," Ander said. "If this call goes through, it proves they were in bed together."
Leonard went ashen on the floor and pleaded, "Mr. Jack, Mr. Jack, save me. I've been loyal to you and Ms. Lydia-you can't just abandon me."
Jack's face darkened, and he said nothing. He had been counting on Leonard to cripple Ander, that little punk, but the kid turned the tables. Useless.
The call connected almost at once, and Zachariah exploded with curses. "Leonard, you motherless dog-Juggins Group brings in a real hardcase and you don't give me a heads-up. Just wait. I'll wipe out your whole family."
Alexis took the phone, hung up, and tossed it into the trash.
Stunned faces ringed them. No one had expected swaggering Manager Leonard to be a traitor colluding with gangsters to siphon off the Group's assets.
Jack ground his teeth. "Leonard, so you really colluded with outsiders to go after the Juggins family's property? Fine. Very fine. I trusted you all this time. Men, drag this bastard out and feed him to the dogs."
"Enough," Alexis snapped. "Let him go."
Jack snarled, "Alexis, are you going to let this traitor off?"
Alexis said flatly, "Don't forget who you are. You're the Juggins family's heir, not a two-bit thug. 'Drag him out and feed him to the dogs'-we don't do that."
"Eve, notify law enforcement to arrest him. His crime is corporate espionage, with an amount involved around a million. That's enough to put him away for decades."
Employees couldn't help swallowing hard. Compared to Jack's brainless bluster, Alexis-the former president-was the real queen of the Group, iron-wristed.
"President, give me one more chance. I won't dare again," Leonard wailed. "I've worked hard for the Group all these years-please, one more chance. I don't want to go to prison."
Alexis turned to leave. "Manager Leonard, go cry to the judge. The judge is the one who decides your fate."
"Ander Yale, come to my office."
Ander arched a brow. He hadn't realized his CEO wife was this formidable at Juggins Group. Even Jack Juggins, the family's heir, didn't have her presence.
In Alexis's office.
"Sit."
At his CEO wife's invitation, Ander sat and casually crossed one leg over the other.
From behind the desk, Alexis's brows knit at the sight, but she said nothing.
"Give your account number to Secretary Eve. In a moment, a hundred grand will hit your account."
Hearing that, Ander immediately pulled out his bank card and handed it over.
Other big shots walked out of prison to find foundations showering them with cash and masters lining up to throw obscene fortunes at them. He was different. The old man had given him nothing but skills.
This hundred grand was Ander's first pot of gold after getting out.
Eve smiled. "First day on the job, and a hundred grand lands in your account. Ander, you really make people jealous."
Ander laughed. "No big deal. You worked hard too, Secretary Eve. Dinner's on me after work."
Eve lit up, about to accept, but one glance at Alexis's cool expression sent her retreating in a hurry. Going to dinner with the president's husband-she didn't have the guts for that, not yet.
Alexis toyed with a pen. With just a touch of makeup on that exquisite face, she was stunning beyond reason.
"I didn't expect you to pull this off-getting back that batch of goods even I couldn't reclaim."
She looked at Ander and said casually, "I'm strict about reward and punishment. You earned great merit, so you get a hundred grand and a promotion. Tell me, what position do you want?"
Ander smiled. "I'm not greedy. Just a small request. How about being your personal secretary, darling Alexis? Not too much to ask, right?"
Her cheeks flushed. She said in shy anger, "My personal secretary? You think that's not over the line? No way. Pick something else."
He had known she wouldn't agree. He waved it off. "Suit yourself. It's not like I care much for positions in your Group."
Alexis let out a breathy, annoyed laugh, unsure where Ander got the nerve to be so cocky. A good post in Juggins Group started at around twenty grand a year, and plenty of people would scramble for it.
Just then, a burly middle-aged man hurried in. "President, there's progress on what you asked me to look into." He shot a wary glance at Ander on the sofa.
Alexis said calmly, "George Stuttard, Ander isn't an outsider. Go ahead."
George lowered his voice. "President, you asked me to investigate the poisoning. We can now confirm it's linked to Lydia Juggins."
