In the end, Zachariah personally led his boys to escort Juggins Group's goods worth about a million dollars to the front gate.
In the car, the petite secretary Eve Balam couldn't snap out of it for a long while.
Ander Yale scratched his cheek, sheepish. "Ms. Balam, staring at me like that-do you think I'm handsome?"
Eve's cheeks flushed; her mouth went dry. "Ander, you were insanely fierce just now, like an action star from the movies."
"My God, I've never seen a man that capable in real life."
Ander just smiled and said nothing.
They were small fry-nothing compared to the convicts he had floored in the Women's Prison.
The two took the elevator straight to the External Affairs Department floor of Juggins Group.
Leonard rushed up first, sneering. "Back so soon to disgrace yourselves?"
"Kid, I told you-if you don't have the chops, you crawl for me."
"You failed the task. Be a good boy and go sweep trash in the corner."
"Also, you're working late tonight. You're not leaving before midnight."
Ander sat down and took a sip of water. "Manager Leonard, I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you."
"I already got that shipment back."
Leonard didn't even pause. He snorted. "You think I'd believe that?"
"Even our senior execs couldn't get it back. You?"
Ander couldn't be bothered with the fool. "Ms. Balam, mind waking this idiot up?"
Eve said at once, "Manager Leonard, Benji's people returned our goods worth about a million dollars, untouched. They're downstairs right now."
Leonard blinked, still skeptical. "Ms. Balam, are you messing with me?"
Eve shook her head. "I'm not. Ander got that million-dollar shipment back all by himself."
No sooner had she spoken than one of Leonard's men hurried up from downstairs, wide-eyed. "Manager, the million-dollar cargo is back."
Leonard's head buzzed. "Bullshit. I'll check myself."
Refusing to believe it, he ran down to verify.
He returned wearing the constipated look of a man whose whole family had hanged themselves. "Kid, who would've thought-you actually pulled it off."
"Fine. I'll honor my promise. A hundred thousand dollars, as your reward."
Ander said coolly, "Hold on."
Leonard snorted. "What? Don't you want the hundred grand?"
Ander rose and closed in on him step by step. "Yes, I want it-because I earned it."
"But aside from that, Manager Leonard, did you forget our other agreement?"
"Get on your knees and bark. I'm listening."
Leonard exploded. "Insolent! You're a lowly employee-ordering your manager to bark? Ander Yale, don't you think you're defying your superior?"
Ander sneered. "So you're planning to eat your words? Treat your promises like hot air?"
Leonard looked humiliated. "Newbie, that's enough."
"Give me a way to save face. I'll give you the hundred grand, and we all look good."
"If you push this and make a scene, I guarantee you're the one who'll pay."
Eve shot Ander a look, urging him to let it go-take the money and don't blow it up.
Other colleagues from External Affairs stepped in to speak for Leonard.
"Ander, brother, it's no big deal. Let it go."
"Ander, you're new here. How can you talk to a company leader like that?"
"Ander, you only got that hundred grand thanks to Manager Leonard. If I were you, I'd be grateful, nothing else."
Leonard straightened his suit, smirking with disdain.
To go up against him? A newly hired live-in son-in-law didn't even come close.
The next instant, Ander lashed out, booting Leonard square in the kneecap.
Crack! Leonard's kneecap split. He broke into a cold sweat and dropped to his knees.
"You bastard! You dare hit a company leader?"
Ander looked down at him, face like ice. "Trash. You think you're clever enough to play games with me?"
"You owed me a bark, so you pay up-bark."
"Otherwise, I'm afraid you'll end up a real dead dog today."
Gasp! Around them, employees-including Eve-clapped hands over their mouths, faces full of shock.
Ander was way too bold.
First day on the job, and he kicked a manager? Was he trying to ascend to heaven?
Someone slipped away to fetch senior executives to deal with Ander.
Ander's gaze stayed cold. "Manager Leonard, a real man keeps his word. You lost the bet-own it."
"Move it. Kneel and bark. If you don't bark today, this won't end."
Leonard couldn't stand from the pain. "Yale, I'm one of Ms. Lydia Juggins's people. You're in big trouble."
Thump! Ander kicked again, shattering his other kneecap.
Leonard collapsed onto both knees and screamed. "Stop, stop! Don't hit me-I'll bark, okay?"
Dealing with a posturing coward like this was child's play for Ander.
"Bark."
"Woof!"
"Woof, woof."
Leonard knelt, barking like a dog, his teeth grinding hard enough to crack.
Eve and the others couldn't bear to watch.
The high-and-mighty HR manager was, at that moment, nothing but a dog.
Meanwhile, the new hire Ander stood his ground with a presence that rivaled the chairman.
"What are you doing? What the hell are you doing?"
A roar cut through the floor.
The crowd parted as Jack Juggins, the Juggins family's eldest young master, strode in with a stormy face.
A dozen lackeys trailed behind him, bristling with menace.
Leonard tried to stand but grimaced from the pain, shouting, "Jack, you have to back me up!"
"This newly hired punk defied his superior and assaulted his manager."
Jack Juggins was Lydia Juggins's older brother, the Juggins family's eldest grandson. Hearing that, he glared at Ander, face fierce.
"You've got some nerve. The Juggins family feeds you and clothes you, and instead of gratitude, you dare attack our staff?"
"Kneel to this young master and kowtow to Manager Leonard right now."
Ander said flatly, "Why would I apologize to a traitor to the company?"
Jack blinked. "A traitor? What are you talking about?"
Ander pointed coldly at Leonard. "This mutt colluded with Benji's men to hold back the company's million-dollar shipment on purpose."
"With an inside-outside hook-up like that, what else would you call him but a traitor?"
Leonard's face changed. He snapped, "Jack, don't listen to this bastard's nonsense."
"I'm a Juggins employee, loyal to Ms. Lydia and to you. How could I do something like that?"
"He's slandering me. Jack, please clear my name."
Jack sneered. "Ander, Manager Leonard is a cornerstone of the company. You say he's a traitor? Sorry-I don't believe you."
Ander scoffed. "If you don't believe it, you're an idiot, not some big young master of the Juggins family."
Jack's face twisted. "The hell did you say? Say it again."
Ander met his eyes, utterly unafraid. "I said you can't even tell right from wrong. Your own company took a hit, and you're still in the dark."
"If that isn't idiocy, what is?"
Jack flew into a rage. "Men, break his legs. Make this punk kneel when he talks to me."
