Ten minutes later, Ander Yale let out a breath and drew back his hand. "All right. I've forced all the toxins out of Alexis's body."
"Diego Scull."
"This old man is here," Diego replied. "What do you need, young friend?"
"It's not an order. I owe you an apology," Ander said. "Those silver needles of yours are rare and probably pricey, right? But they're contaminated now. You'll likely need a new set."
Diego hurriedly waved it off. "Just a high-grade set of silver needles. What's a little money? Compared to the medical skill you showed me today, the needles are nothing."
Ander tensed and took a wary step back. "I said this beforehand-I don't take disciples."
"Doctor, don't tell me you've read too many cheesy urban novels and came here to kneel and call me 'Master.'"
"After all, I'm just an ordinary guy, not some protagonist worth your worship."
Diego's weathered face turned awkward. He had, in fact, meant to ask Ander for guidance. This man was unfathomable, especially the way he expelled the toxins. That depth of power took at least a top-tier Martial Arts expert. Peerless in medicine and in Martial Arts-someone like that, he, Vincenzo Scull, would even kneel to take as a master.
But Ander had read his intent and cut him off in advance.
Helpless, Diego said, "Since you're not inclined, I don't dare force it. I do have a presumptuous request, though. There are difficult cases in the medical arts I'd like to consult you on in the future."
Ander didn't refuse. He pulled out his phone. "Sure. You scan me, or should I scan you?"
Diego blinked. "Of course you scan me. How would I dare scan you?"
"There's a pecking order to QR scanning?" Ander asked, puzzled.
Diego stroked his beard with a sly grin. "Naturally. Like when a man and a woman sleep together, who is on top and who is on bottom matters."
"When you scan someone, your phone is on top and the other person is beneath you. Doesn't that feel satisfying?"
Ander chuckled.
This old quack might come up short in medicine, but he had useless trivia in spades.
A soft moan drifted from the bed. With the toxins purged, Alexis Juggins's eyes cleared.
"Alexis, are you back?" Quinton Juggins and Emery Casson asked, nervous and hopeful.
She looked dazed for a heartbeat, then nodded lightly. "Mom, Dad, Gwen, I feel much better."
Gwen Lidyard clapped, delighted. "Uncle, Auntie, you hear that? She recognizes us. She's really back!"
Quinton and Emery broke into tears of joy.
"Ander, well done. Our family owes you," Quinton said, slapping Ander's shoulder, too excited to stand still.
Ander hurried to answer, "Dad, I'm Alexis's husband. This was my duty."
On the bed, Alexis's snow-pale face hardened at once.
"Don't be mad, sweetheart," Emery said quickly. "It was only a stopgap while you were ill. Now that you're well, you can go to the civil registry tomorrow and divorce this kid."
Alexis drew a steadying breath, her smile still a shade wan. "Mom, Dad, Gwen, Mr. Scull, could you step out for a minute?"
"I want to talk to him alone."
Diego nodded to Ander. "Young friend, we'll be in touch. I hope you won't be stingy with your guidance."
Quinton and Emery, along with Gwen, hurried out to see Diego off.
In an instant, only Ander and Alexis remained.
Facing the peerless beauty on the bed, Ander scratched his head, unsure how to begin. Now that she was lucid, Alexis carried a cool, untouchable air, like an ice-cold fairy. She was nothing like the adorable, dazed girl she had been.
"So your name is Ander Yale," Alexis asked evenly. "Before you went to prison, you were my cousin Lydia Juggins's boyfriend, right?"
Ander nodded. "Yeah. Five years ago, I did date your cousin."
"But that woman has nothing to do with me anymore."
"You don't need to tell me that," Alexis said, turning her flawless face aside. "I don't care."
"Ander, you saved my life. I'm grateful."
"But we aren't suited. I hope you understand."
Ander paused, then shook his head. "I didn't save you for your gratitude."
"Back in the Women's Prison, you saved my life too."
"When I saw you being bullied there, on the verge of death, I couldn't look away," Alexis replied, voice cool. "But don't read into it, as if I saw you differently. If it had been someone else, I'd have helped just the same."
"I know. You're kind," Ander said.
She blinked, a little surprised by his calm, then grew faintly vexed. "If you're a smart man, why let Lydia manipulate you into marrying into our family as a live-in son-in-law?"
"You must know she meant to humiliate us, and to keep you under her thumb."
"At first, I didn't want to deal with Lydia at all," Ander said with a small smile. "She doesn't have the standing to meddle in my business."
"But when I saw the bride was you, Miss Alexis, I didn't think twice."
"If you were in trouble, I wasn't going to stand by."
Her expression turned complicated. She hesitated, then steeled herself. "I believe you mean well."
"But you and I are worlds apart. I can't marry you."
When he said nothing, she softened, guilt nibbling at her. "I know you just got out and have nothing. It's hard out there. How about this, I'll give you $500,000 as thanks for saving me. Tomorrow we'll go file for divorce."
Ander shook his head. "That won't do."
Her pretty face cooled. "Why not? Do you really think I'll willingly be your wife? Or do you think you deserve me?"
"I think having me as your husband is something to be proud of," Ander said. "So, Miss Alexis, don't be ungrateful."
She stared at him, stunned.
After her impairment, her standing in Zerton might have plummeted. But with her mind restored, Alexis Juggins was once again the untouchable goddess who had towered over all of Zerton.
Looks, intelligence, capability-she had it all.
Honestly, no man in Zerton measured up. At minimum, it had to be a rising star from the provincial capital, or from Shenton.
"So $500,000 isn't enough? Fine, I'll add more. How about $800,000?"
"This isn't about money."
"Then what do you want? Say it. I, Alexis Juggins, can afford whatever price you name."
Ander studied his proud, willful wife and spoke plainly. "I don't want money. I want you."
Color rushed to her cheeks; even her neck turned pink. She hissed between clenched teeth, "Shameless. You really don't know your place."
"I already told you-we aren't a match."
She exhaled hard. "I won't argue with you. This marriage will end, whether you agree or not."
Ander looked a little aggrieved.
He wasn't trying to be a creep. He genuinely needed Alexis.
The Nine Suns Divine Skill he practiced had slammed into a deadly bottleneck at the seventh layer. His Masculine Fire grew by the day, scorching his dantian raw.
By sheer luck, he had married a wife as lovely as a flower. While treating her, he discovered she possessed the extremely rare Frost Physique.
With a treasure like that, he didn't even need to do anything indecent; just holding her as he slept would be cool to the touch, indescribably soothing.
More than that, he needed Alexis's Frost Physique to suppress the fire raging in him.
Now this convenient wife wanted a divorce. Ander wasn't the type to cling. With his abilities, he could eat well and drink fine anywhere, even become a local overlord.
But for the moment, he truly couldn't find another woman whose constitution matched Alexis's.
He thought for a moment and asked, "Alexis, you really want to divorce me?"
She snorted. "What else?"
"I know you're a good man, but the gap between us is too wide. I hope you get that."
Ander drew a deep breath. "Fine. We can divorce. Just agree to give me one night."
Her pearly teeth flashed as she bared them, and her jade-white hand whipped toward him. "Lecher! So you didn't save me out of kindness at all, you were just lusting after me. Get out."
She truly felt like breaking down.
What kind of man was this? Every other word out of his mouth was about claiming her.
Even a scumbag knew to take things step by step.
This deranged approach was something Alexis Juggins had never encountered.
