After seeing Diego Scull off, Emery Casson and her husband came back.
"Ander Yale, what are you doing? Did you lay a hand on my Alexis?"
Emery stormed in like a tigress and roared.
Ander raised both hands. "Mom, you misunderstood. Alexis and I were just chatting."
Emery eyed him, half-convinced. She turned to her daughter. "Alexis, he was alone with you-did he cross any lines?"
Alexis couldn't bring herself to mention Ander's shameless demand earlier. She tamped down her ire and said, "Mom, I'm fine."
Quinton Juggins said, "Good girl. You could recover thanks to Ander."
"Come on, downstairs. I'll cook myself. The four of us will have a proper meal and celebrate."
Ander hurried to respond. "Dad, let me give you a hand."
Quinton laughed. "Good. You're worthy of being our Juggins family's son-in-law. Ander, I like that."
Listening to their easy banter, Alexis felt her heart sink.
This Ander was a shameless rake. Cozying up to her dad like that-was he trying to rope him in so she couldn't divorce?
He could dream!
After dinner, Ander kept busy, running off to help Quinton clean the kitchen.
Emery snorted. "This brat really doesn't hold back. He's acting like this is his own home."
Alexis said coolly, "Mom, I'm not going to marry him, so I want a divorce."
Emery froze, then spoke in an unusually measured tone. "Alexis, I don't advise you to do that. At least not right now. You can't divorce him."
Alexis blinked. "Can't divorce him? Mom, what do you mean?"
"Don't tell me you're as old-fashioned as Dad and actually think Ander and I are a good match?"
Emery grimaced. "He may have saved you and is a benefactor to our family. But as a match for you? He's still a far cry."
"Daughter, our situation is bad. Especially after you fell ill, you lost your voice in the group."
"If you divorce Ander, your grandpa will use you as a bargaining chip to marry into another big family in Zerton."
Alexis fell silent.
Before everything went wrong, Patrick Juggins had already planned to match her with another major Zerton family-the Medlem family.
Alexis had never wanted that. The Medlem family's heir was a useless dandy; she had never looked at him twice.
After the incident, the Medlem family backed off.
"So you mean Ander should be my shield?" she asked.
Emery glanced toward the kitchen, then lowered her voice. "Exactly. Have Ander be your shield."
"That way, the old man can't pull strings with your marriage."
"And right now, within the clan, we can't even lift our heads. We need someone to take the fall."
"He's an ex-convict-perfectly suited."
Alexis's brows drew together. "I may not be a match with Ander, but asking me to use him feels a bit much."
Emery let out a cold laugh. "How is it too much? He's an ex-convict, living in our house and eating our food. We haven't treated him poorly."
"Besides, he's the one sticking to you. We didn't force him."
Alexis hesitated. "And then what? I can't string him along forever, can I?"
"Of course not," Emery said. "He can afford to waste time. My sweet girl, you're in your prime-you can't."
"Once you retake the CEO seat of Juggins Group and can sleep easy, kick him to the curb."
Seeing resistance on Alexis's face, she quickly softened her tone. "Fine, I know that's not your style. We'll sit him down and give him a big payout so he can live comfortably for the rest of his life. That's acceptable, right?"
Alexis finally nodded. "Alright, let's do that."
Suddenly she remembered something. Her face flushed, and she snapped, "But Mom, I have one more concern."
"Ander lives with me day and night. What if he tries something on me?"
Emery frowned. "That is a problem."
Seeing Ander come out of the kitchen, she called, "Ander, come here. I have a few words for you."
Ander came over. "Mom, go ahead."
"You saved Alexis. Our family won't forget," Emery said. "But your marriage with her still needs evaluating."
"So, starting today, you are not allowed to step into Alexis's room, and you are absolutely not allowed to touch her."
Ander refused outright. "Mom, Alexis and I are husband and wife. With a demand like that, your son-in-law can't comply."
He wasn't some monk. Marry a wife and never touch her? He might as well walk away and find someone else to vent his Masculine Fire.
Emery's brows shot up. "Bastard! So you're still eyeing Alexis's body? I'm telling you-"
Before she could finish, Alexis cut in. "Mom, enough. I'll talk to him."
"Ander Yale, either we file for divorce tomorrow, or you keep living here and we maintain appearances as a married couple."
"But you don't touch me. I know you have needs, so I'll allow you to go out and look, but remember-you cannot bring anyone home."
Ander stared. "You'll allow me to go find someone? Seriously?"
"Seriously," Alexis said, her tone flat.
Ander nearly laughed. What a stroke of luck.
He liked Alexis, but he couldn't just sit around and let his Masculine Fire burn him up.
Since this ice-queen wife had said so, if he kept hemming and hawing, he wouldn't be a man.
The next morning, Alexis regained the crisp, commanding aura of Juggins Group's female CEO and headed for the company at full speed.
Before leaving, she shot Ander a sideways glance. "Can you drive?"
Ander said, "Which kind?"
Her gaze chilled. She pointed at the luxury car by the door. "The Bentley. Can you drive it?"
Hearing the kill-you tone in her voice, Ander quickly nodded. "Oh, that's what you mean. Hand me the key-I can drive."
Half an hour later, they arrived at Juggins Group.
"President, are you alright?"
Alexis's secretary, Eve Balam, stared wide-eyed, both shocked and delighted.
Alexis tucked a silky strand behind her ear and smiled gently. "I've recovered. Eve, thank you all for your hard work."
Eve's eyes went a little red. "It's nothing, President. As long as you're well, we're all happy."
Alexis turned her gaze toward Ander, about to introduce him.
Click, click!
With the crisp beat of high heels on tile, a group of suited executives from Juggins Group approached.
At the center was Lydia Juggins, the current darling of the family, draped in luxury labels and heavy makeup.
"Heh, I saw the family chat say early this morning that Sister Alexis had recovered," Lydia said with a syrupy smile. "As your younger sister, I didn't quite believe it then."
"Seeing you in person now-who knew bringing in a live-in son-in-law would flip your luck like this? Congratulations."
Alexis said mildly, "Speaking of that, I should thank you, cousin."
"If not for you, my condition wouldn't have been cured by Ander."
Lydia blinked. "What did you say? Your illness was cured by Ander?"
"Correct," Alexis said. "The very live-in son-in-law you brought in cured me."
A dark glint flashed in Lydia's eyes.
She hadn't expected that ex-convict to ruin her plan.
Alexis being out of her mind had been great for the whole Juggins family. Now that she was fine, it was a massive threat to Lydia.
"Ander-I didn't expect you could treat people," Lydia said, her gaze cold as it slid over him. Then she snorted. "Sister Alexis, since you're at the company, join the meeting later."
"Grandpa ordered me to serve as acting CEO. I'll be officially appointed in three months. I hope you'll cooperate with my work."
Alexis's face remained composed, though anger simmered underneath.
The CEO seat had originally been hers.
Sure enough, while she was ill, Lydia's second-branch family had looted almost everything that belonged to Alexis.
"Eve, take Ander and give him any position," Alexis said briskly.
With that, she strode toward her office.
Her illness had caused too much trouble. She had to take back what was hers, fast.
Eve glanced curiously at Ander. "So, you're our President's live-in son-in-law?"
Ander curled his lip. "You're wrong. I live on my own skills, not off a woman."
Eve choked back a laugh. "Don't pretend. All of Zerton is buzzing that our President took in a live-in son-in-law for luck."
"I'm not mocking you, I'm just curious. Come on, I'll arrange an easy post. From now on, you're part of Juggins Group."
"Landing a job here-lots of people dream of it."
Ander wasn't impressed.
Not to mention, with his superb medical skills, he could make a fortune anytime. Before prison, right after graduating college, he had founded a company.
It had been small, but its prospects were excellent.
Back then, Ander had already been a rising star in Zerton's business circle.
Eve led Ander to an office area. "You'll work in the Internal Affairs Department."
"It's all simple-just paperwork. You should be fine."
Ander hadn't even agreed yet when a balding, middle-aged man with oily glasses strode over.
"Secretary Balam, leave this one to me," he said. "You don't need to bother with him."
