Actually, when Ocean Sabey called me, I had no intention of going over. If Benedict Cole wanted to go home, he could call a designated driver himself. If he didn't want to go home, he could go wherever he pleased.
But the moment Ocean hung up, Vivian Sabey added me on WhatsApp.
She sent several photos. Some showed her kissing Benedict. Others showed her leaning against his shoulder that evening, their intimacy unmistakable.
She didn't bother with a single unnecessary word, but her meaning was obvious.
She was provoking me. She had Ocean call me with the address, then used those photos to rile me up. She wanted me to come catch them in the act.
I came, but I didn't make a scene. That was why she had grown anxious.
A coward?
Ha. What a joke.
I stopped in front of the door and watched the rain that had begun falling at some point. Then I turned to Vivian and gave a soft laugh.
"I have nothing to fear. Benedict won't divorce me. He won't marry you. He's only playing around with you."
"Playing around with me?"
Vivian Sabey looked as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. She spent nearly half an hour telling me the story of her and Benedict.
According to her, Benedict had gone to her family's home with Ocean during the summer vacation before his sophomore year of high school. He had fallen for her at first sight.
He had even gotten into fights for her, offering her his whole heart. Unfortunately, she already had a boyfriend, and the age difference between them made a relationship impossible back then.
She said that when she got married, Benedict had cried like a broken man. He had drunk himself into a stomach hemorrhage and called her dozens of times.
When she divorced, Benedict had told her that he would take care of her from then on.
That divorce had happened during the third year of my marriage to Benedict. In other words, they had gotten together during my third year of marriage.
She said she had never gone abroad after the divorce. She had stayed in another city the entire time, living in an apartment Benedict had bought for her.
He visited her every month, and they did everything lovers did.
She knew that today was my wedding anniversary with Benedict. She had deliberately chosen that day to come to South City. She had forced Benedict to choose between us, and Benedict had chosen to spend the day with her.
It was the first time I had heard the complete story of Benedict and Vivian. I listened with great interest.
Vivian expected to see fury blazing across my face. Instead, I merely shrugged and gave her an indifferent smile.
"So what? He still won't marry you. I'm the wife, and you're the mistress. No, you don't even qualify as a mistress. You're just his kept woman.
"This is a society governed by law, and morality is written across everyone's forehead. You're like a rat crossing the street, someone no one dares acknowledge in daylight.
"The apartment Benedict bought for you? Tsk. Do you even know what marital property is? If I'm feeling generous, you can keep living there. If I'm not, I can take it back."
Vivian Sabey clenched her teeth in fury. "Don't get too cocky! He'll marry me!"
My smile widened. "You had me brought here tonight and were so desperate to lay everything out in front of me. That means you've already argued with Benedict countless times, but he never gave you the answer you wanted. You've lost faith in him, so you came to provoke me. Am I right?"
I had hit the sore spot. Vivian flew into a rage. Her anger climbed so high that she looked ready to pounce on me and strangle me to death. To protect my life, I reached out and patted her shoulder.
"How about this? If you can get Benedict to ask for a divorce, I'll divorce him immediately."
Vivian froze for a moment, then stared at me with wide eyes. "Really?"
I thumped my chest and promised, "Truer than gold. If I'm lying, may Benedict die without a single heir!"
Vivian was about to say something else when Benedict and Ocean came out.
Both men had injuries on their faces. They had clearly been in a fight, and Ocean's injuries were much worse than Benedict's.
No wonder they had taken so long. Apparently, the two good friends had been sparring in the bathroom.
As Vivian left, she kept glancing back at me, silently warning me not to break my promise.
