Vivian Sabey came straight to me, deliberately picking a fight. I wasn't surprised.
She was getting desperate.
Benedict was a year older than me, while Vivian Sabey was seven years older than him. I was twenty-nine, which made her thirty-seven.
She wasn't young anymore. If she kept waiting a few more years, she really would be old.
Benedict still hadn't made their relationship official, and there was no end to the waiting in sight. Today, she had deliberately called me over without telling Benedict. She wanted to provoke me, but more importantly, she wanted to pressure him.
I got home at nearly four in the morning.
After applying ointment to the cuts on Benedict's face, I pulled up the photos Vivian Sabey had sent me and showed them to him. Once he realized the truth was out, he stopped hiding it.
"Vivian Sabey was the girl I liked in high school. She thought I was too young and said she only saw me as a little brother. In the end, she went off with a rich kid two years older than me."
"She only rejected me because I was poor. After I married you, I actually forgot about that relationship. Then one day, Ocean Sabey suddenly told me his sister had gotten divorced and wanted to see me…"
Vivian Sabey said her husband had cheated on her during their marriage. She came from a modest family and couldn't compete with her husband's powerful, wealthy relatives. Even though he was the one at fault, she had been forced out of the marriage with nothing.
After spending several years as a rich man's wife, she had lost touch with the real world. She couldn't find a job and was nearly unable to pay her rent.
Benedict said he had struggled with it, but Vivian Sabey had cried her eyes out while repeatedly saying she regretted not choosing him back then. Then came one phone call after another, each one filled with declarations of love. In the end, he had lost his resolve.
"Mandy, will you forgive me this once? I promise I'll cut things off with her."
Vivian Sabey said that when she got married, Benedict had cried like a dog. I had never seen a dog cry, but with his face all scrunched up, Benedict did look like a pug.
"Are you really going to end things with her?" I asked.
Benedict immediately raised his hand and swore, "I swear!"
Benedict said Vivian Sabey had returned in secret and hadn't called him until she reached the airport. He had asked Ocean Sabey to pick her up, but Vivian Sabey had threatened to kill herself if he didn't go.
He said Vivian Sabey hadn't been in a good state of mind lately and had been acting recklessly, so he had tried to keep her calm. He hadn't expected her to have Ocean Sabey call me over.
He said he no longer loved Vivian Sabey. It was just that having the goddess of his youth finally yield to him gave him a sense of accomplishment, along with a twisted, almost sick satisfaction.
