Chapter 5 My heart stopped. He never called during the day. Never. He was always "too busy." I stared at his name flashing on my screen, my mother still talking in my ear. "Emma? Emma, are you there?" "Mom," I whispered. "David's calling me." The silence on the other end was deafening. "Don't answer it," Mom said immediately. "Emma, listen to me. Whatever he wants, it's not good. Get to the warehouse. Now." But something made me answer. Maybe I needed to hear his voice one last time....
