My pulse hammered in my ears at the words that slipped out of Caius’ lips. My hands began to tremble and my breath grew shallow by each passing second.
“Who cares if I am using her babies, it’s for the greater good of this pack! You know the power Selena holds in her blood...”
Alaric’s voice faded as I stumbled backwards. My shaky body hit the wall, my hands sinking into it like it wasn’t supposed to be made of concrete. Before I could process what was happening, I felt the wall behind me disappear and I lost balance. A gasped escaped my lips as I tumbled down a long flight of stairs.
My back hit a cold, hard floor and I groaned out in pain. My body still felt awfully sore from the beating I received earlier and this fall made it worse. I pushed myself up from the floor, my eyes scanning my surroundings meticulously.
Where was I?
My mind was still boggled by what I had heard earlier, and now I had been thrown into a dark room. My hands moved through the smooth wall, eager to find a light switch. After a few minutes, I felt a light switch and flipped it on.
My eyes fell on the glass compartments and what was inside each of them make my blood run cold. My breathe hitched in my throat as my legs lost all power in them. I fell to my knees, as my eyes stayed fixed on the five still born babies that were enclosed in the glass compartments. It didn’t take me time to realize what they were.
“M-My babies,” My lips quivered.
I placed my hands over it mouth, my chest growing hotter by the second. The words I had heard behind the office door began to creep into my mind, it was all starting to fall into place. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I forced my eyes away from the glass compartments. My eyes found a small cabinet, which was beside a lab station.
Syringe, chemicals and potions lay around the lab, confusing me even more. I needed answers.
I picked myself up from the floor and rushed to the cabinets. I opened each of them, fishing out the documents inside. I picked up the first file, flipping through it.
“A DNA test? My DNA test?”
I blinked in disbelief and I read through the contents. The DNA test showed that I was half werewolf, half witch and my blood seemed to contain some sort of divine power. With trembling hands, I placed the file down and picked up the next. This file contained wedding invitations and a wedding plan. The names written on the invitation were Alaric and Freya.
My heart dropped. Who was Freya?
I looked through the wedding plan and it was a lavish plan to make Freya have the best wedding of her life. I clenched my fists as I remembered that Alaric did not hold any wedding for me, it was all starting to make sense now. As I placed the file back, a few photos slipped out of it. Picking them up, my eyes fell on Alaric, and a beautiful woman. Each picture was of the both of them, arm in arm like lovers.
No doubt that this was Freya.
Wiping my tears, I pulled out my phone and took pictures of the DNA test and all the experiments he was conducting. I took a step back, my eyes turning to my babies. With a heavy heart, I bolted out of the secret room. Even after I had gotten out of the pack house, I didn’t stop running. With tears plastering my cheeks, I ran into the forest. Only when I was surrounded by large trees, did I come to a stop.
My lungs burned slightly as I tried to catch my breath, a dull ache spread through my leg muscles and I sunk into floor. I curled my knees up to my chest and hugged myself as tears poured down my face in relentless hot waves. My chest felt heavy as I tried to catch my breath in between sobs.
How could this be? The only man I had known and loved was only using me as a tool? I couldn’t stand the pain growing in my chest.
As my sobs filled the air, a voice rang through the forest.
“Selena?”
The familiar voice caused me my head to spin around. My eyes fell on Caius, and his eyes caught mine, with a hint of sadness and wistfulness as he drank in my features.
The moment our eyes met, I began to feel a gravitational pull towards him. It was like an electric force, pulling me up from the ground. I staggered to him, like I was in a trance. Caius held the same trance like gaze and I could feel each nerve in my body cry out for him.
I wanted him...no, I needed him.
His hands caressed my cheeks softly. “Selena, you’re...my mate.”
