Chapter 2: The Public Humiliation

Words : 0 Updated : Oct 30th, 2026
Sunlight. It felt deceptive after the midnight intimacy of the dungeon, flooding the great hall with a cheer that was a lie. I kept to the shadows near the wall, a bowl of untouched stew in my hands, trying to be invisible. The pack’s laughter was too loud, their camaraderie a fortress I would never be allowed to enter. I was the "honored guest," the "pack healer" – the useful oddity tolerated for my skills with herbs and poultices. If they knew the truth of my magic, of the curse that bound me to their king, their tolerance would turn to fangs and fire. My thoughts were still tangled in the dungeon’s chill, in the memory of Caleb’s heartbeat under my palms. The phantom warmth was a brand. A tool. Nothing more. His words from last night echoed, a cold counterpoint to the residual heat of the bond. “Well, if it isn’t the little mouse.” The voice, sharp and dripping with condescension, sliced through my thoughts. I looked up to see Selene, the pack’s head warrior, flanked by two of her cronies. She was everything a werewolf female should be – tall, powerful, fiercely beautiful, with a mane of dark hair and eyes that missed nothing. And she had made it her personal mission to remind me of my place, which, in her view, was beneath her boot. “Selene,” I acknowledged, my voice neutral. I focused on my stew, hoping she’d pass. She never did. “That slop can’t be good for you,” she sneered, knocking the bowl from my hands with a casual swipe. It clattered to the stone floor, splattering my dress with greasy broth. A few nearby pack members glanced over, some snickering, most quickly looking away. No one crossed Selene. My cheeks burned. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. Don’t react. Don’t give her the satisfaction. “You need real meat to build strength. But then again,” she leaned in, her voice a venomous whisper, “you’re not really one of us, are you? Just a weak little human the King keeps around out of pity.” The insult was a familiar one. But today, after the raw exposure of the ritual, it cut deeper. Pity? If only she knew. It was far more dangerous than pity. From the high table, I felt his gaze. Caleb. He was watching, his expression unreadable, a golden goblet held loosely in his hand. Our eyes met for a fleeting second. A jolt, sharp and unwelcome, traveled the bond – a flicker of… something. Irritation? Embarrassment? Then, he looked away, turning to listen to one of his elders. He said nothing. Did nothing. His silence was a confirmation, a public ratification of Selene’s words. My place was indeed here, in the spilled stew and the echoing laughter. The humiliation was a physical weight, crushing me. I turned and walked away, my head held high even as my vision blurred with unshed tears. I wouldn’t let them see me break. The day passed in a haze of shame and anger. I tended to minor injuries in the healing ward, my hands moving on autopilot. Each snide remark from passing warriors, each curious or hostile glance, felt like a fresh scratch on an open wound. Caleb’s public dismissal hurt more than Selene’s cruelty. It was a betrayal of the secret world we inhabited, a denial of the life-saving connection we shared under the cover of darkness. As evening fell, a strange restlessness settled over me. The bond, usually a quiet hum in the background, felt… agitated. A low-grade thrum of discomfort began to pulse behind my eyes. It wasn't my pain. I knew the texture of my own headaches. This was different, sharper, more volatile. It felt like… contained lightning. It’s him,my inner wolf, Lyra, whispered, a creature of instinct I usually kept tightly leashed. The bond. He’s in pain. Good,I thought with a viciousness that surprised me. Let him hurt. Let him feel a fraction of what I felt today. But the thought was hollow. Because with every passing minute, the discomfort grew, twisting into a genuine, shared ache. The bond didn’t care about my pride or my righteous anger. It was a brutal, impartial tether. His pain was mine, whether I wanted it or not. By nightfall, the ache had become a throbbing, insistent pressure in my skull. My hands trembled as I lit a candle in my room. Images of him, chains straining, muscles taut with the effort of control, flashed behind my eyes. The full moon was still a day away. This was early. The stress from the day, the anger he must have felt and repressed, had triggered his blood. A soft, urgent knock sounded at my door. I knew who it was before I opened it. Kael, Caleb’s most trusted Beta, stood there, his face grim. “Iris,” he said, his voice low. “You’re needed. It’s the King.” The words should have given me a sense of power. He needs me.Instead, a cold dread pooled in my stomach. This was worse than the monthly ritual. This was unpredictable. Dangerous. I followed Kael through the silent, torch-lit corridors to the King’s private chambers, not the dungeon. This was new. The agitation in the bond spiked as we approached the door. Inside, the room was in disarray. A heavy oak table was overturned. Caleb was on his knees by the fireplace, his back to me, his entire body rigid with tension. The air crackled with his suppressed power. I could see the faint, angry red lines of the curse-mark beginning to glow through his shirt on his back. His breaths came in ragged, painful gasps. “Leave us,” I told Kael, my voice surprisingly steady. The Beta nodded and closed the door, leaving me alone with the crumbling king. “Caleb,” I said softly. He flinched but didn’t turn. “Get out.” The words were a strained growl. “You know I can’t.” I took a cautious step forward. The bond screamed at the proximity, a mixture of excruciating pain and that irresistible pull. My own head pounded in sync with his. “Your pain… it’s mine too. Let me help you.” “I don’t want your help!” he roared, finally turning his head. His eyes were pure, molten gold, the wolf riding him hard. Sweat gleamed on his brow. The sight of him in such raw agony shattered the last of my vengeful resolve. My anger melted away, replaced by a healer’s instinct and something else, something terrifyingly close to tenderness. “You don’t have a choice,” I whispered, closing the distance between us. I knelt behind him. He shuddered as my fingers brushed the fabric of his shirt. Ignoring his growl of protest, I placed my hands flat on his back, over the burning curse-mark. The connection slammed into us both. A wave of relief so intense it was almost painful washed through the bond from him into me. A broken sob escaped his lips as my magic flowed, cool and soothing, dousing the internal fire. His rigid posture collapsed; he slumped forward, his head nearly touching the floor, his hands gripping the hearthrug. I worked in silence, weaving the familiar spells, reinforcing the metaphysical chains. The only sounds were his ragged breathing slowly calming and the crackle of the fire. The intimacy was a thousand times more profound than in the dungeon. Here, in his private space, surrounded by the wreckage of his control, there were no masks. Just a man and the woman who held his sanity in her hands. When the worst had passed, he remained on his knees, his head bowed. The anger was gone, leaving behind a profound exhaustion that echoed dully in my own bones. I started to pull my hands away. His own hand, large and calloused, shot out and covered mine, pressing it firmly against his back. The contact was electric. His skin was still feverishly warm. “Stay,” he rasped, the word thick with shame and a need he could no longer deny. “Just… for a moment.” And in that single, broken word, I heard the truth that Selene’s taunts and his public indifference could never erase. He needed me. Not just as a tool, but as an anchor. The victory felt hollow and heartbreaking. Because now, the question wasn't whether he needed me. The question was, what would I do with this power? And what would it cost us both when the sun rose again?
