Chapter 3: The Unwanted Spark

Words : 0 Updated : Oct 30th, 2026
The silence in the King’s chamber was heavy, thick with the aftermath of pain and the unspoken shame of his plea. Stay. The word hung between us, a fragile, broken thing. My hand remained trapped under his, the heat of his skin seeping into mine. For a long moment, neither of us moved. The bond hummed with a strange, quiet tension that was no longer about agony, but about something far more dangerous. Then, as if suddenly realizing what he’d done, Caleb released my hand as if it were a hot coal. He pushed himself upright, turning away from me to face the dying embers in the fireplace. The broad line of his back was rigid, a wall of renewed defiance. “You can go now,” he said, his voice back to its familiar, gravelly coldness. The vulnerability was gone, locked away behind the mask of the Alpha King. The whiplash was brutal. The compassion that had swelled in me moments ago curdled into a fresh, sharp anger. He used me. He took the solace my magic offered, clung to my hand for a moment of weakness, and now he was dismissing me like a servant who had completed a distasteful chore. I stood up, my legs trembling slightly from the expended magic and the emotional turmoil. “Of course,” I said, my voice clipped. “Wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome.” The bitterness seeped through despite my best efforts. He didn’t respond, just continued to stare into the fire, his profile stark and unyielding. Frustration, hot and reckless, boiled within me. The memory of his silent complicity in Selene’s humiliation, the cold dismissal after the dungeon ritual, the sheer injustice of it all, overwhelmed my caution. As I gathered my things, a wicked thought crossed my mind. If I was just a tool, then let the tool have a little imperfection. I focused my will, not to soothe, but to give a slight, sharp tugon the magical threads of the Curse Contract. It wasn’t enough to cause harm, just a jolt, a reminder of the leash that bound us. He gasped, a sharp intake of breath, and his hand flew to his chest. He spun around, his eyes blazing with fury. “What was that?” he snarled, taking a threatening step toward me. The sudden movement, the raw anger radiating from him, made me stumble back. My foot caught on the leg of the overturned table, and I lost my balance with a cry. Time seemed to slow. Instead of hitting the cold floor, a strong arm shot out and caught me around the waist, yanking me hard against a solid, unyielding chest. Impact. It was like lightning striking dry tinder. The moment our bodies connected, the bond erupted. A wave of pure, undiluted sensation crashed over me, obliterating thought. It wasn’t the controlled flow of healing magic. This was raw, untamed connection. Every nerve ending screamed to life. The scent of him—pine, frost, and pure, male wolf—filled my lungs, intoxicating and familiar. The hard planes of his body against mine felt less like an impact and more like… a homecoming. A treacherous, unwanted homecoming. A low, guttural sound ripped from Caleb’s throat, part growl, part moan. His arm tightened around me, crushing me to him. His other hand came up, his fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of my neck, not roughly, but with a possessiveness that stole my breath. His head dipped, his forehead resting against mine, his hot, ragged breaths fanning my face. The world narrowed to this point of contact. The anger, the resentment, the pride—it all melted away in the face of this primal, biological imperative. The bond was singing, a triumphant, deafening chorus that drowned out every rational thought. My body arched into his of its own volition. My hands, which had come up to push him away, instead fisted in the fabric of his tunic, holding on for dear life. Mine,Lyra purred inside me, a sound of pure, unadulterated satisfaction. Ours. His eyes, locked with mine, were wide, the gold swimming with a chaos of emotion—shock, fury, and a desperate, undeniable hunger that mirrored the ache blooming deep within me. For a heartbeat, an eternity, we were frozen there, two enemies bound by a force more powerful than hate, teetering on the edge of a precipice. Then, sanity returned like a bucket of ice water. He recoiled as if I had burned him, shoving me away so violently that I stumbled back against the wall, gasping for air. The loss of contact was a physical wound, a sudden, aching coldness that made me want to whimper. He stared at me, his chest heaving, his expression a mask of horror and self-loathing. He looked at his own hands as if they belonged to a stranger. “Get out,” he whispered, the words laced with a venom that was now directed inward. “Get out now.” I didn’t need to be told twice. My own shame was a hot flush on my skin. What had I done? What had wealmost done? I fled from his chambers, the echo of his heartbeat—or was it mine?—thundering in my ears. The cool night air of the corridor did nothing to douse the fire he had ignited. I leaned against the cold stone wall, trembling uncontrollably. I could still feel the ghost of his touch, the searing heat of his body. He hated me. I resented him. But our bodies, our souls, bound by this cursed contract, screamed otherwise. And in the devastating silence after the storm, one terrifying truth became undeniable: the line between hate and something infinitely more dangerous was perilously thin. And we had just danced right on the edge of it.
