Mansel and his companions were suddenly frightened.
Canyn was dissatisfied with them. Did it mean that punishment would soon descend upon them?
Gannicus and Forney were relatively better off, merely feeling pure fear.
But Mansel was trembling all over. Recalling the agony he experienced that night and knowing it was only one percent of its intensity, he felt like he might faint at any moment.
"Boss, is Mr. Canyn dissatisfied with how we dealt with Pinckney?" Gannicus asked quietly.
"That's impossible. We didn't specify how to deal with Pinckney. How could Mr. Canyn be satisfied or dissatisfied unless he wanted Pinckney's life? But it seems Mr. Canyn had no such intention. I think the problem still lies with this car. It seems that Mr. Canyn was picked up by this car yesterday, and the driver was a woman," Forney suddenly had a eureka moment and seriously analyzed.
"Are you saying that Mr. Canyn didn't want the woman driving the car to see him recognizing or having any contact with us?" Gannicus quickly caught on.
"I think so," Forney nodded.
Watching the car drive away, Mansel also came to a realization.
Their handling of Pinckney was not wrong. The mistake was choosing the wrong time and place to report in person.
Mansel was extremely frustrated.
He had wanted to demonstrate his worth to Canyn, only to realize now that he had inadvertently made things worse.
"Boss, what do we do?" Gannicus said, "Should we try to clear up this misunderstanding?"
"What plan? Don't make things worse. Let's go back. If Mr. Canyn doesn't contact us, we can only try to contact him after a month. We mustn't come here again to wait for Mr. Canyn," Mansel prayed, "I hope Mr. Canyn isn't too angry this time."
"How come sister Corda sent you to pick me up again? I could have taken a taxi," Canyn conveyed a friendly signal to Phillisa.
"Sister Corda trusts and treats you so well. I didn't expect you to be such a person," Phillisa said coldly.
"What did I do?" Canyn felt helpless.
"Don't tell me those three men you met are all good people," Phillisa gave Canyn a disdainful look through the rear-view mirror.
Considering that Emmiline was facing external pressure from Urith and internal betrayal by such a scheming wolf like Canyn, Phillisa couldn't help but worry for Emmiline.
"What defines a good person? Does having bad looks mean someone is bad, and having not so bad looks means they are good? Knowing people's faces but not their hearts, isn't it too arbitrary to judge a person just by appearance?" Canyn didn’t want to explain in detail, he just wanted to state his point of view not to judge people by appearances.
Who said that Mansel and his group couldn't be good people?
Does being a gangster mean one can’t be good?
Such arbitrary judgment of people is not good.
Phillisa, unusually, did not refute Canyn's words. Because she thought of Urith.
Did Urith look bad in any way?
On the contrary, Urith was incredibly charming, embodying all the good traits.
But Urith was a bad person.
So, judging a person as good or bad based on their appearance is indeed too arbitrary, which made sense.
However, Phillisa, despite not refuting Canyn's words, would not hide what she saw today from Emmiline. As for Emmiline's choice, Phillisa had no influence.
Arriving at Emmiline's house, Emmiline was not in a hurry to leave this time.
She was busy in the kitchen.
"Canyn, you're here. Come on, thank you for your hard work. I've almost prepared everything. You take over the cooking. Hiroko loves the food you make, so you’ll have to work a bit harder. I will pay you more," Emmiline said smilingly upon seeing Canyn.
"Really, Sister Emmiline? You said it," Canyn's eyes lit up, appearing very interested in the money.
"I said it, no lies. Now, get to work," Emmiline said cheerfully.
"Right, make more. Phillisa is eating here too," Emmiline added with a smile, "I leave the kitchen in your hands."
"Please, even if you hired a national-level chef, they couldn’t compare to me," Canyn boasted. Although he had never competed with a real national-level chef, his master had said that the food they made was not as enjoyable as Canyn's. Isn’t that enough to judge their skills?
"I don't know what level a national-level chef is, but I've been to many good hotels in Tokai City, and their food tastes a lot worse than your cooking yesterday," Emmiline laughed, "I can't believe someone your age can cook so well."
"Sister Emmiline, if you were forced to be responsible for three meals a day from a young age, and the person that you had to feed was very, very picky, I believe you would have even better cooking skills than me," Canyn shrugged his shoulders, trying to satisfy his master's palate was truly difficult.
"Looks like you had a childhood that's hard to look back on," Emmiline said with a smile.
"It's not so unbearable to recall. This skill of mine is my wealth. Whether the past was bitter or joyful, what matters most is what it leaves for the present and the future," Canyn said while busily working and chatting with Emmiline, not neglecting either task.
"That's quite philosophical. I'm going to wake Hiroko up and tell her you've made breakfast," Emmiline said with a laugh, leaving the kitchen.
Canyn wasn't sure if his words had any impact on Emmiline, but she did seem to be in a good mood.
Just a slight change in Hiroko had such an effect on Emmiline. Was this what familial love was like?
Canyn was serious when he said he envied Hiroko.
Phillisa also noticed Emmiline's good mood and hesitated for a moment, deciding not to bother her for now.
However, looking at Canyn busily working in the kitchen, Phillisa's feelings were complicated.
The multifaceted nature Canyn had shown in a short time made it hard for Phillisa to grasp what kind of person he really was. Even her conviction that Canyn was not a good person was now shaken to the point of being overturned.
Hiroko got up briskly, Canyn's breakfast was too tempting for her.
This made Emmiline very excited, as she was the one who woke Hiroko up. Although the main reason was Canyn's breakfast, Emmiline felt a sense of accomplishment in it.
Sometimes, people are very easily satisfied.
After breakfast, Hiroko was stuffed, and even Emmiline showed signs of being full.
Phillisa, being more reserved and always controlling her diet to maintain her figure, fared a bit better.
Though she didn't eat much, she couldn't deny that Canyn's breakfast was the most delicious she had ever had.
After the meal, Emmiline and Phillisa washed the dishes together.
Once Emmiline changed her clothes, she left for work.
"So, how is it?" Emmiline asked with a smile. "Waking you up early to pick Canyn up wasn't in vain, right? It's not easy to get such a breakfast. Hmm, you should stock up on more ingredients in the morning. Add more variety, maybe some seafood. I wonder if Canyn can cook seafood. Hiroko really likes seafood."
"Mhm," Phillisa replied seriously as she drove, agreeing. Seeing how excited Emmiline was, Phillisa was unsure whether to share what she saw when she went to pick up Canyn.
"Phillisa, do you know? Yesterday, Hiroko talked to me voluntarily and called me 'mom'," Emmiline excitedly shared her feelings, needing someone to share with. And without a doubt, Phillisa was the best person for that.
Phillisa, though Emmiline's subordinate, was also her close friend.
"Ms. Emmiline, when I went to pick Canyn up this morning, I saw those three thugs waiting for him at the community entrance again," Phillisa, after much thought, decided to report the situation.
"The same three people as yesterday?" Emmiline asked.
"Mhm."
"This means Canyn has quite a few acquaintances, which is fine. You can't judge whether a person is good or bad just by appearance. People who look like thugs aren't necessarily bad, and those who don't seem at all related to bad people might not be good. Urith is just an example of a bad person disguised as a good one," Emmiline remarked.
Phillisa was stunned for a moment. Emmiline's words were strikingly similar to Canyn's.
"You seem relaxed," Canyn said, looking at Hiroko lounging on the sofa and watching TV, a bit speechless.
"Hehe, why not when someone is eager to do the work for me?" Hiroko winked and smiled.
"Why would someone be eager to work for you?" Canyn asked, sitting down.
"I know, I understand, they're slowly changing," Hiroko pouted.
"As long as you understand. Get ready, we're going to pick up the photos. I briefly tested Emmiline's attitude, she didn't mention the past at all. It seems we'll have to work harder ourselves to uncover the truth," Canyn knew that since Emmiline hadn't told Hiroko anything for so long, the likelihood of her telling him was even lower.
"You didn't raise her suspicions, did you?" Hiroko quickly sat up.
"How could I? Do you think I'm as foolish as you?" Canyn said with a laugh.
"You're the foolish one!" Hiroko retorted.
"Who's foolish will be known. Hurry up and change. I'm busy this afternoon and might not be free later. If you don't go this morning, I won't accompany you," Canyn urged, as he had a meeting with his senior brother at noon.
"Can't I come with you for whatever you're doing?" Hiroko asked curiously.
The more she followed Canyn, even if he said nothing, Hiroko was sure she could gradually uncover all his secrets.
"It's not appropriate to take you," Canyn shook his head. It was his first visit to his senior brother's house, and there might be many people he hadn't met before. It was indeed inappropriate to bring Hiroko.
More importantly, there were Canyn's big secrets there. To maintain the mystery that bound Hiroko's curiosity, it was essential not to let her get close to these secrets. So, he was determined not to take her.
