The meeting rooms on this floor were not soundproofed because the management believed that they should practice transparency, considering that all employees on this floor were in the same department. The meeting rooms for business deals and partnership negotiations are on a different floor and were soundproofed. With this, the exchange between Director Park and Manager Beiwase is clear and free for all to hear.
October, with her usual calm and cold nature, walked passed by some employees in the hallways. They would usually stop to greet her. She naturally would greet them back, for she thinks that it was only fair to do it; it is ethical.
The employees whodon’tt know of this would be at first nervous and turn pale while greeting her, but were left blushing or awestruck at her. Who wouldn’t be when a goddess with a cold air she always carries around her was there greeting you back and looking at you with her green eyes that makes you shudder in awe? Her appearance would really make one, both male and female, fall for her instantly. Because of this, her admirers kept on increasing, but of course, October doesn’t know this.
Never mind her almost out-of-date outfit and tasteless clean bun, those were all overlooked by her calm demeanor and elegance that can be seen in every action and movement. And her cold temperament and expressionless face were on another level of beauty.
While waiting for her elevator, October wondered why the employees always turned red every time she greeted them. She’s baffled by it. Thinking that she couldn’t come up with a plausible explanation, she turned to her secretary and asked her about it.
Yun Xixi looked at her boss and sighed while shaking her head. "Director, you are a sinner. A sinful lady."
"Why? Was I the one who made them sick or something? If so, let them take a day off to let them rest, lest it affect their work." October tilted her head, getting more confused at the answer she got from Xixi.
Like this, Yun Xixi had to endure not to blush at the sight of her boss, who looked at her with a bewildered expression, making her boss look so cute. She may still seem lacking in expression, but her eyes were sparkling at least.
"Don’t mind them, Director. It's a normal reaction for us normal people." Yun Xixi shrugged her shoulders with a sweet smile plastered on her face. ’Boss doesn’t know the impact she has on us normal people, always leaving us flustered with our hearts pounding in our chest. She’s not good for our fragile hearts. Tch, tch. Boss is a sinner.’
"Is that so?" October really couldn’t understand what Yun Xixi meant, but there’s nothing she can do about it and so she just shrugged it off.
The elevator door opened, and so they entered and went back to their office.
Right after sitting on her chair, her cellphone rang. October stretched her neck, which was getting sore, and reached her hand out to get her phone, which was beside the bouquet. She almost forgot about this. She let out a tired sigh and, without even checking who the caller was, she answered it. "Hello."
"Dear daughter." A light voice like a feather, accompanied by a soft laugh, can be heard on the other end of the phone.
October’s eyes immediately turned sharp, letting out a dangerous glint. "Fu Yung."
"My, you still call me that. Shouldn’t it be ’mother’? Anyway, you’re still as calm as ever, I see." Fu Yung giggled. "After everything that happened, you’re still calm. I really can’t handle that if it were me."
"Speak. What do you want?" October may sound calm, but her room was filled with a very suffocating feeling and a chilling atmosphere enough to make one freeze to death. October would never call that woman ’mother’ even if it kills her. It almost took all of her strength just to keep herself calm while speaking with this woman.
"Well, your brother’s 5th birthday is coming, so you have to be here for the party." Fu Yung said as her voice softened at the mention of her son.
October knew that after a year that she left that house, she had a new brother. She never met this brother of hers, so this would be a first for her to see him.
"Does he know?" October asked hesitantly as her palm curled into fists, feeling very nervous.
"Oh, you mean my husband? Yes, he knows. I was the one who pleaded with him to invite you." Fu Yung replied proudly as she twirled her hair around her finger.
October knew that her father had already abandoned her, but she still had this little hope she carried with her, yearning for her father. Unfortunately, the truth hurt her, and her little hope immediately lost its light.
Fu Yung frowned when October didn’t answer. "You have to be here. I already sent the invitation there in your office."
"..." October doesn’t really wanna go to that mansion. A home that she was robbed of. A home she can never call her own.
"October, don’t be so distant now with me. Besides, we were best friends before, right?" Fu Yung said with a tinge of mocking sound in her sweet voice.
October felt her blood boil in anger as her hold of her phone tightened, and she shook. She wished she hadn’t talked to this woman. She so wanted to scream at her and curse her, but she couldn’t, for she knew that this woman was so cunning and vicious. She thought that all the curses she knew were not enough to describe this woman with the name Fu Yung.
Best friend? October mocked her stupidity and blindness for not seeing the true face of this woman.
"Best friend? You don’t deserve to be called that." October spat. Although her voice was calm, Fu Yung could still feel the coldness in her voice as if it formed into sharp icicles and viciously stabbed her.
Fu Yung snapped, her sweet face cracked, revealing a vicious look. "Slut! Don’t be overconfident with yourself." She was hissed as she heavily breathed, eyes seething with fury.
Fu Yung thought that just being friends with October was already lowering herself. Acting sweet and soft to this cold person was tiring. "Don’t forget that you have to show your face on your brother’s birthday."
October looked at her phone with her lips pursed. This woman was shameless.
A knock on the door caught October’s attention, followed by Xixi’s voice on the other side of the door. "Director, there’s a letter for you."
Massaging her aching head, October leaned back on the chair while closing her eyes. "Send it in."
Memories of the past played before her closed eyes. It was almost like it was just yesterday that that day happened. When her suspicion became a reality, it was a hard slap to her face. She was supposed to be in a house with a warm family, but all of that shattered when Fu Yung entered her home. But her father...
October almost winced at the pain in her heart when she thought of her father. She thought she’d already gotten accustomed to this kind of feeling, that she’s already gone numb and would be indifferent to such things.
"Director?" Yun Xixi worriedly asked as she noticed that the complexion of her boss was deathly pale. She looked almost lifeless, especially when her eyes were closed, if not for her soft breathing. "A-are you okay?"
October snapped her eyes open, unable to cover the dark gleam in her eyes. When she realized that it was Yun Xixi, she immediately retracted her biting gaze. "Just put it there."
"Okay." Yun Xixi put the envelope on the table with shaking hands, for she was shocked when her boss looked at her with a sharp and dangerous glare. She glanced at her boss again and noticed that her eyes were already back to normal, making her heave a sigh of relief.
October propped her forehead on her hand that was on the table and sighed. She’s sad, but she can’t shed even a single tear. Why was she such an abnormal existence? If it were normal, would her family accept her? If she were more expressive, would her senior not leave her?
All she ever wanted was someone to treat her genuinely. A person who can accept her for who she was, even if she was in a way defective. If so, she’ll surely treasure that person.
Drowning in her miseries, a small gust of wind blew around the room. A floral scent was carried with it and filled the room, and almost intoxicated October. It helped her pull out of her bubble of misery. She followed the scent and stopped the bouquet lying silently on her table.
Unconsciously reaching her hand out to touch the flowers, it felt so soft and ticklish to her fingers. She was planning to have these flowers thrown out, but at this time, she couldn’t make herself do it. It was just a feeling, but this feeling was strong. She doesn’t know why.
And so, she decided to keep the flowers and just decide on what to do with the necklace later, and tossed it in her bag.
