Claire took the gowns and stepped inside the trial room, drawing the curtains shut behind her. She looked at the two gowns and decided to try the one with intricate details and a lower price tag. With a sigh, she hesitantly began to discard her clothes.
As she slipped into the gown, she felt the fabric gliding smoothly over her skin. She caressed the soft material clinging to her body. Looking into the mirror, a blush crept onto her face. She looked so different. She had never had the luxury of wearing a nice, expensive dress. She was in awe of her own reflection. Holding the skirt, she twirled a few times, observing her figure more closely from every angle. The gown was long, fitted at the waist, and its skirt flared at the bottom with a train flowing along the back. She felt nice and confident in the dress. Then she remembered the salesgirl's words. She tried to look for a defect but couldn't find one. The dress looked almost perfect.
But when she thought of wearing it in front of many people, she felt awkward. Despite the undeniable elegance of the wedding dress, its backless and off-the-shoulder design made her feel vulnerable. She felt exposed and self-conscious. She wasn't perfect like the women in elite circles and felt people would judge her. Only models and celebrities with flawless beauty and perfect figures were used to coming here to buy dresses. She feared the staff in the store would mock her if she went out in the dress.
She opened her bun and let her blonde straight hair cascade freely over her shoulders and down her back, immediately hiding her skin. She checked herself again and now looked modest and less revealing in the dress. Now she felt courageous enough to go out and ask for Adam's opinion. It was also part of their plan to appear as a loving couple. She hoped he had finished his call and could give her his opinion about the dress. If he thought this dress was okay, she would be spared from trying on the other gown.
She slid the curtain open and stepped out, holding the skirt in her hand so she could walk easily in the long gown. She looked around but didn't see him, so she walked further into the store and found him talking to a lady. She chewed her lip hesitantly before walking toward him. As if sensing her presence and noticing the murmurs in the room directed at Claire, Adam turned.
His curious gaze fell on Claire, and his lips parted in astonishment. His eyes widened with surprise, and the expression on his face was one of disbelief. He was unable to fathom whether it was real or his imagination. His usually boring PR manager had suddenly become so stunning, even without any heavy makeup changing her looks. Her loose clothes were gone, and the dress she wore left nothing to the imagination. The soft, sheer fabric clung to her body, putting her perfect curves on display. Her perfect bun was gone, and he could see her silky long locks falling freely around her face, making her look like a bright moon peeking through the clouds.
"Wow!" he whispered unconsciously, making Claire's face turn red under his admiring gaze. 'Is this okay?" Claire murmured shyly, her eyes meeting his before shifting to the floor. Adam's attention moved from her face to the dress she was wearing. Though Claire couldn't distinguish between an exclusive design and a rejected piece, Adam knew the difference, having been in the fashion world and modeled for all the famous brands. He grimaced.
"What are you wearing?" he scowled, making Claire flinch with embarrassment. She knew she couldn't look fine in anything. She ducked her head to her chest and mumbled in a low voice, "I thought you just approved it."
Then Adam realized his actions and quickly moved closer to Claire, taking her in his arms. 'I am sorry, babe. It wasn't meant for you. You are looking, wow! You look perfect in everything you wear. In fact, only you can carry this,' he made a face, gazing at the dress before continuing, 'this dress and make it look graceful. However, who gave you this to try on?" He frowned, clearly annoyed at whoever did this to his fiancée. His nose flared in rage as he glared around the hall, seeking the salesgirl responsible.
Claire looked up, her eyes filled with uncertainty. From the corner of her eye, she saw the saleslady who had treated her coldly retreating, trying to hide behind her colleagues.
'It's alright, Adam. I think it's nice, and we can save some money, you know?" she smiled, trying to calm the movie star down.
'No, love, it's not okay. And money is not a problem here. I want the best for my wife," he stressed the words "my wife' so intensely that Claire's heart skipped a beat. The sincerity of his words felt so real that she wanted to ignore it. They were supposed to be pretending to be a couple madly in love. Adam was playing his part very well, but Claire was nervous and scared. If he kept doing it more frequently, how could she resist falling for her charming boss, who had employed her as his contract wife?
'Adam!' Suddenly, the designer Kelly entered the store. "I'm sorry, I wanted to be on time but was stuck with a celebrity client, and she was very demanding," she said with a light-hearted laugh as she walked over to Adam. Her expression turned serious, however, when she saw the fury on his face.
'What's wrong, Adam?" Kelly asked, her tone shifting to one of concern.
