Maria was anxious about what they would do without Alessandro and how to explain his death to the Italian Mafia. She dreaded the thought of leaving her luxurious lifestyle and being forced to run their business, especially with her son being a useless idiot.
Her voice hardened as she gritted out, “You've made a grave mistake, Enzo. Alessandro was the reason we thrived. Without him, we could lose everything. You don't understand that.” Alessandro had posed no threat, having stepped down from his inheritance for Enzo. Though she hated him, she selfishly allowed him to live.
“That's why I never liked him, Madre. You always wanted me to be better than him,” Enzo spat bitterly.
At that moment, his wife, Vittoria, emerged with their son, Lorenzo. She had overheard and understood her husband's resentment.
“Is that true?” Vittoria's eyes gleamed with wicked pleasure.
Enzo smirked. “That's true, my love.”
“I knew it,” Vittoria chimed. “Now you can rule this empire on your own.”
“See, Madre?” Enzo declared triumphantly. “I did it for you.”
Maria feigned happiness. “But it's not the right time to celebrate, Enzo. We need to pretend to grieve.”
“Oh, Madre, no more pretending,” Enzo announced loudly. “I'm the one who makes the rules now.”
Just then, the main door burst open. An authoritative figure entered, causing Enzo's face to drain of color.
“What's the matter, everyone?” Alessandro mocked, a cold smile creeping onto his face.
“You... you're alive?!” Enzo stammered, disbelief evident in his voice.
“Did you expect me to be dead, brother?” Alessandro sneered.
“No, it should be your enemies who are dead,” Maria interjected, trying to protect her son.
“Really, Mother?” Alessandro taunted, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Yes, Alessandro. We were just surprised by your sudden arrival,” she replied, attempting to divert his attention.
“Do I need anyone's permission to come to my own home?” he scowled.
Maria tried to distract him, but he stalked toward Enzo. “So, stepbrother, why are you so afraid to see me?”
Enzo trembled, his fear palpable.
“Alessandro, I'm not afraid of you. I'm happy you're alive,” he declared, though Maria knew her son was sealing his fate.
“Your henchman is dead, the one you sent to kill me. Now it's my turn to kill you,” Alessandro announced coldly.
“No, that can't be true. Enzo would never harm his brother,” Maria murmured, disbelief etched on her face.
“I have his confession and a recording of the call where he gave the order,” Alessandro stated, turning to Maria with indifference.
“He tried to kill my wife, and I won't forgive that,” he growled, his anger simmering beneath the surface.
Maria's heart sank. He knew everything. There was nothing she could do to save Enzo now.
“If that's true, he should suffer for his crime,” she declared, icy resolve in her voice as she took Alessandro's revolver.
Before Enzo could comprehend, a bullet pierced his heart, and he collapsed to the floor, dead in an instant.
