Jessie and Nash sat in silence, like strangers, barely exchanging a word.
The car drove down the street.
Nash was quietly enjoying the faint spiritual energy coming off of Jessie.
For someone like Nash, spiritual energy was like gas for a car.
Without spiritual energy, Nash was unable to cultivate.
Nash wasn't sure why Jessie had spiritual energy, but he could feel that the closer he got, the stronger it got.
He found himself leaning over in the passenger seat, getting closer to Jessie without even realizing it.
He thought to himself, "If being near her gives me spiritual energy, what would happen if I touched her? Man, that's embarrassing! I'm way out of this mortal's league!"
"Nash, can we talk?"
Suddenly, Jessie pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car.
Jessie turned her cold yet stunning face toward Nash, who was lost in thought.
"What do you want to talk about?" Nash turned to her.
"I know these past three months have been uncomfortable for you at my home," Jessie said, her voice just as cold and emotionless as her expression.
"But you can't just ignore my family's reputation and go out like that. Don't you think that's a bit much?"
Nash was about to protest when Jessie continued, "Don't worry, we still have one month left on our contract. Once it's up, we'll get divorced right away, and you'll be free. I'll even give you an extra 50,000."
"Contract? Money?"
Nash was about to ask what she meant when Jessie's phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at her phone. It was the hospital.
She picked up. "Hello?"
"Dr. Ryder, there's been a major incident. The director wants you to return to the hospital immediately. This afternoon, a school bus collided with a truck, and many children were injured."
Hearing that, Jessie's face instantly turned pale.
"I'm on my way back!"
She immediately started the car, made a sharp U-turn, and sped off toward the hospital.
Nash sat in the passenger seat, thinking to himself, "So my wife's a doctor."
At Nytherea Central Hospital, as Jessie pulled up, she could see ambulances and staff rushing around at the entrance.
She jumped out of the car and rushed inside.
"Dr. Ryder, you're back!"
As soon as she walked in, a nurse ran over.
"What's the situation?" Jessie asked, quickly throwing on her white coat.
"Most of the kids are stable, but a few are still in surgery. One girl is in critical condition. She might not make it."
"Where are they?"
"In the emergency room!"
Jessie sprinted toward the emergency room.
Nash followed but just sat out in the hallway, feeling like none of this had anything to do with him.
He was still trying to figure out who he was and why Jessie had spiritual energy.
Ever since he woke up, Nash knew his powers were gone.
He was just an ordinary guy now.
Luckily, he'd managed to absorb a little spiritual energy from Jessie, leaving a tiny bit of spiritual power in his energy core.
He tried to use that power, but it wasn't nearly enough to cast any spells.
Still, it was just enough to open up his Divine Sense.
Even though his Divine Sense only reached a few meters, Nash was still satisfied.
At least he knew there was spiritual energy on Earth.
"Looks like I'll need to get closer to my wife if I want more spiritual energy," Nash decided, sitting quietly in the hallway.
The hospital buzzed with activity, yet Nash just sat there, doing nothing.
Half an hour later, the emergency room doors finally opened.
Jessie and a few nurses emerged, their faces downcast.
"I'm so sorry for your loss. We did everything we could," Jessie said softly.
A woman in the hallway broke down in tears.
"Doctor, please! Save my daughter. I'm begging you!" she cried, dropping to her knees in front of Jessie.
But there was nothing anyone could do.
The girl's heart had already stopped for good.
"I'm sorry. We've tried our best," Jessie and the nurses comforted the woman.
But the mother, overcome with grief, ran into the ER and threw herself over her daughter's body, sobbing.
Hearing the noise, Nash couldn't help getting up to see what was going on.
When he got to the ER, he saw the girl lying there, her clothes covered in blood, wounds on her head, with her eyes closed.
The heart monitor next to her was flatlined.
He glanced at the girl and used his Divine Sense on her.
He could see right through her. The blood vessels and meridians appeared in his mind like an X-ray.
"Her pulse is still there!" Nash thought.
"She's not dead?" He checked again, then quickly stepped up.
"She can still be saved!" he called out.
He didn't even raise his voice, but everyone in the room heard him.
Jessie and the nurses all looked at him as if he were crazy.
"Nash, what did you just say?" Jessie asked.
Nash pointed at the girl. "She's not dead. She can still be saved!"
"What are you talking about? Her heart's stopped. How could she possibly be saved?"
"Dr. Ryder, who is this guy? Why is he even in here?" the nurses complained.
Jessie shot Nash a cold look, thinking he was just making trouble.
Nash ignored them and walked straight into the ER.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing?" the nurses tried to stop him as he pushed past.
"Move! Don't get in my way!" Nash snapped.
"This is life or death. If we wait any longer, it'll be too late!"
The nurses, shocked by his outburst, backed off.
Jessie just stared, not sure what Nash was up to.
Nash walked over to the girl, checked her pulse, and then activated his Divine Sense.
Nobody noticed the brief golden flash in his eyes.
After checking her over, Nash pressed his hand on her chest.
"It's internal bleeding. Her chest is full of blood, and it's blocking her heart. No wonder it stopped."
Back on the Dragon Continent, as the Medicine King, Nash could bring people back to life with a Resurrection Pill.
This was nothing compared to that.
"Watch closely, everyone! I'll show you how it's done!"
But then Nash froze.
"Crap, I forgot I don't have my powers!"
Just as Nash was about to show off, he suddenly realized the problem.
The nurses and Jessie, who thought he was about to pull off a miracle, were left staring as he stood there, frozen.
"Uh, sorry, I just remembered I'm out of energy."
Nash turned to Jessie. "Uh… can I touch you for a sec?"
Jessie's face went bright red.
"What the heck? Is he asking to touch me in front of everyone?"
Just as Jessie was about to yell at Nash, he suddenly grabbed her arm.
"You… what are you doing?!" Jessie shouted, her face turning pale with anger.
Nash ignored her and focused on drawing spiritual energy from her.
He still didn't know why Jessie had spiritual energy, but that didn't matter right now.
He had to save the girl.
After just a few seconds, Nash let go of her arm.
"Alright, that's enough," he said, turning to the girl and pressing his palm to her chest.
Spiritual energy surged from his hand into the girl's body, sending a wave of warmth through her.
Five seconds… nothing.
Ten seconds… still nothing.
But at fifteen seconds, the heart monitor suddenly started beeping.
The girl was breathing again.
