"Lifesaver?"
Terry and Elias were so stunned by Michelle's words that their jaws practically hit the floor. They didn't know much about Michelle's background, just that every big shot in Jorkville treated her with huge respect.
They couldn't even begin to guess how powerful her connections were.
And now that they knew Levi had saved Michelle, Terry and Elias finally realized they'd really messed with the wrong guy this time.
"Ms. Lidyard, I'm so sorry! We had no idea you knew Levi-if we'd known, I wouldn't have dared mess with him even if I had a hundred lives!"
Terry started bowing and apologizing on his knees, trembling.
Elias, ignoring the pain in his eyes, also dropped to his knees and begged, "Ms. Lidyard, I know I was wrong. I'm getting old and don't have many years left-please let it slide this time."
"What kind of excuse is that? Trying to play the 'old man' card? It's not that old people have turned bad-it's that the bad ones have just gotten old! No wonder you got kicked out of the Jorkville Medical Association. You had it coming!" Margot snapped.
Elias's face turned beet red-he wished the ground would just swallow him up. He'd been kicked out of the Jorkville Medical Association for his mistakes and had been lying low in Floriaville ever since.
He figured if he could master the Thirteen Needles of Rejuvenation, he'd get his reputation back and maybe even become the top doctor in Jorkville. But he got too greedy and bit off more than he could chew; Now he'd lost everything.
"Ms. Lidyard, we really know we messed up. Please, give us another chance-whatever you want as compensation, we'll do it," Terry sobbed, tears and snot running down his face.
Terry had worked hard to get where he was, and he didn't want to lose it all just like that.
"It's not up to me to decide how you should make it up. You should be asking Levi," Michelle said.
"Yes..." Terry nodded like a bobblehead and shuffled over to Levi on his knees.
"Levi, I was blind-I didn't recognize who I was dealing with. Whatever you want, just say the word and I'll do it." Terry, now stripped of all his former arrogance, wept pitifully.
"Then how about you pay me a billion dollars for my emotional trauma," Levi said coolly.
"Okay!" Terry nodded instinctively, then realized what he'd just agreed to. "Wait... how much? A billion?! Levi, please don't joke."
Everyone else there thought it was ridiculous; Levi had to be messing with him.
But Levi, totally serious, said, "Who's joking? Is a billion really that much? There are guys in Ninos Prison lining up to throw a billion at me and I turn them down."
What a load of crap! Asking for a billion like it was pocket change!
Terry wanted to curse-who would ever believe someone would hand Levi that much money?
It was nuts!
But with Michelle backing him, Terry could only whine, "Levi, I don't even have that much if I sold everything I own."
"You can't cough up that kind of money? Got any top-notch herbs around here?" Levi asked.
Before Terry could say anything, Elias quickly pulled out a fancy wooden box from inside his coat. "Levi, here's a hundred-year-old wild ginseng-will this do?"
Levi's eyes lit up as he took the box. Inside was a golden ginseng, and the aroma hit him right away.
"This is great. Alright, you can go. Just remember-if you're not good at medicine, stop hurting people. Go home and enjoy your retirement." Levi said, satisfied.
"Yes, Levi, you're absolutely right. I swear I'll never chase money at the expense of others again," Elias said gratefully, then, after getting Michelle's okay, hurried out.
Terry was seriously bummed watching Elias get off the hook so easily. That hundred-year-old ginseng had been a gift he'd given Elias just recently. If he'd known it could save his own skin, he never would've parted with it.
"Levi, I paid eight million for that ginseng as a gift for Elias. Now I'll give you another ten million as an apology-please, just let me off this time," Terry said, his heart bleeding.
Levi turned to his family to see what they thought.
His parents and sister were still reeling from the shock. Cyrus said, "Levi, since Terry's apologized, let's just drop it. It's always good to show some mercy, and we don't really need the money."
Cyrus winked at his son, hinting that it's smart to leave some room for people-you never know when you'll run into them again.
Levi got what his dad meant-if you go too far, it could cause problems down the road. But honestly, to Levi, guys like Terry and Elias didn't even matter anymore.
"Alright, since my dad says so, I'll let you off today," Levi said, not wanting to waste any more time on Terry.
"Thank you, Levi! Thank you so much!"
Terry, feeling like he'd just gotten a pardon, quickly told a nurse to grab some top-notch herbs from the pharmacy. They weren't as valuable as the wild ginseng, but they were still pretty good.
He didn't even dare to take back the ten million he'd just offered.
"Levi, please take this money as a way for me to make it up to your family," Terry pleaded.
"Hmm." Levi accepted the card without hesitation.
When the family finished packing up to leave the hospital, it was already late, and there were no cabs around.
Terry quickly arranged a car to drive them home.
Before leaving, Levi made sure to thank Michelle.
"Ms. Lidyard, thank you for today," Levi said.
"It was nothing, really. You would've handled it just fine even if I wasn't there-I only followed you because I happened to spot you on the street and got curious. Actually, I should be thanking you."
Levi could have sorted things out himself, but Michelle was grateful to him for saving her from being poisoned before.
"Haha, it was nothing for me either. I didn't expect you to come all the way to Floriaville. Since you're new in town, how about I treat you to lunch tomorrow at Mire Lodge downtown?" Levi said with a smile.
"Sounds good, it's a date," Michelle agreed right away.
"See you then. We're heading home now." Levi said goodbye to Michelle and left with his family.
"Miss, we already did him a favor; now we're even. Why bother having lunch with him? Even the big shots in Jorkville can't get on your calendar. Why pay him any attention?" Margot asked, puzzled.
"They're nothing compared to Levi," Michelle said, shaking her head.
"What's there to compare? Sure, Levi's a good doctor, but he talks such a big game. I mean, really-saying there are people in prison lining up to give him a billion? Give me a break," Margot snorted.
"But what if he's telling the truth?" Michelle said with a little smile.
"No way! He's totally bluffing. I just don't buy that he's that capable!" Margot insisted.
"Well, we'll just have to wait and see."
