"You ungrateful brat!"
Flynn Duffus almost spat up blood.
"Young man, your word better mean something. You said you wouldn't kill me for an hour. Keeping your promises has been a virtue in Valia since ancient times!"
He glared at Jaden Waller as he spoke.
Jaden couldn't be bothered to answer.
When Eugene Duffus walked out of Darion Group, he didn't rush to scrape together cash. A sly idea slid into place.
"Right, call Brother Louie! He'll get through to Patrick. If Patrick Hoez shows up, that guy is as good as dead!"
He dialed Louie Lyson, young master of the Lyson family.
The three of them usually hung out together-barhopping, nightclubs, dancing till dawn-always thick as thieves. Eugene was always the one footing the bill.
The call connected quickly.
"Hey, Brother Louie! Why can't I get through to Patrick? Did you guys go crazy again last night? Why didn't you call me to pick up the tab?"
"Patrick Hoez is dead," Louie Lyson said on the other end.
"Huh?"
"How is that possible?"
"Brother Louie, you're messing with me, right?" Eugene chuckled, not buying it.
"You think I've got time to joke with you?" Louie's voice went cold.
"Uh… then who did it? They've got a death wish."
"None of your business. Don't ask."
"Okay, uh, Brother Louie, I've run into something. Could you do me a favor?"
"What is it?"
"That remnant of the Waller family came back. He stormed into my company, hurt me, and is holding my dad. He sent me out to raise money. If I can't get it, he'll kill my old man."
"The Waller family? Which Waller family? You mean that Waller family from five years ago?"
"Yeah! Brother Louie!"
On the other end, Louie Lyson's face darkened.
"Jaden Waller. I didn't expect you to come back."
"Five years ago you slunk off like a stray dog, and you still dare return?"
A playful smile tugged at Louie's lips.
"Since you're back, don't even think about leaving. Stay in Jenos forever."
"Back then, you strutted around like you owned the place. I wonder if you can still act that high and mighty."
Back then, Jaden had thrashed the rich heirs of the Four Great Families one by one. Not a single one escaped a beating.
When Louie fell silent, Eugene whispered, "Brother Louie, are you still there?"
"I can't get away today. Tomorrow is the old man's sixtieth birthday. After that, I can head out," Louie said.
The old man had given an order: before the birthday, no incidents, no blood. His word was like an imperial decree-no one dared disobey.
But once the banquet ended, there would be plenty of time to deal with Jaden. Assuming Jaden lived that long.
"What am I supposed to do, Brother Louie?" Eugene sounded close to tears.
"You can go find Finnegan Farrell, second young master of the Farrell family," Louie said, pointing him to a path.
"Brother Louie, I don't really know him. And I heard he's a hard case-never goes to those kinds of places."
"You don't need to know him. Just tell him Jaden Waller is back. He'll act," Louie said with a laugh.
Having someone else do the dirty work was one of Louie's favorite games.
Emilio Farrell, the Farrell family's eldest son, was still bedridden, never to walk again. All because of Jaden.
Years ago, Emilio bullied a maid of the Waller family. Jaden broke his leg for it.
Time hadn't cooled that hatred. Finnegan had held a grudge all these years, swearing to avenge his brother. He had been searching for Jaden's whereabouts for five years with no results. If he learned Jaden had returned to Jenos, he would stop at nothing to hunt him down.
"I got it, Brother Louie."
Eugene hung up and headed straight to the Farrell family, one of the Four Great Families.
…
"That rebel, why isn't he back yet? He didn't ditch his old man and run, did he?" Flynn Duffus fretted inside Darion Group.
More than half an hour slipped by.
"Time's almost up. Want to give him a nudge?" Jaden rested his chin on his hand and glanced at Flynn.
Before the words faded, Eugene swaggered in at the head of a small crowd. The fear and panic from earlier had vanished from his face.
"Dad, I'm back to save you."
…
"Good son, nicely done. You even got the Farrell family to step in," Flynn said, ecstatic.
"Jaden Waller, you're alive after all."
The young man in the lead finally looked Jaden's way.
"Finnegan Farrell? What are you doing here?" Melina Shadboult's face changed the moment she saw him.
She knew what had happened back then-Jaden had broken Emilio Farrell's leg.
Finnegan had brought a lot of people. He was clearly here to take Jaden's head.
"This has nothing to do with you. Melina Shadboult, you'd better stay out of it. Otherwise, don't blame me for not giving the Shadboult family face," Finnegan snapped. "I'm here for one thing only-to avenge my brother."
"Your life for his leg."
"Five years. Do you have any idea what my brother went through for five whole years?"
"I've been looking for you for five years."
"And you actually dared show your face in Jenos."
He gave a cold laugh, shot Jaden a look, then let his eyes linger meaningfully on Melina.
"Oh, I get it. You couldn't resist coming back for your sweetheart."
"Melina Shadboult, I don't understand you. Why is a stray dog like him worth your five-year vigil? Worth breaking with your family?"
"Look at my sister-now that's smart. The moment the Waller family fell, she broke off the engagement. Now she's married off to Jenton and living the high life."
"And you? You're out here working for someone else."
"I can't fathom what's so great about a trash company like this. Wouldn't it be nicer to just be the Shadboults' pampered eldest daughter?"
Finnegan mocked without restraint.
Eugene muttered under his breath, "Trash company???"
Jaden smiled. "When I broke your brother's leg, I remember you on your knees, begging me to stop. You hugged my leg and wouldn't let go, wiped your snot all over my pants."
"You're begging to die! Kill him!" Finnegan exploded.
"Yes, Second Young Master!"
Dozens of fighters behind him surged out, fanning to both sides as they rushed Jaden.
A heartbeat later-
Bang!
Jaden stamped once.
Every single one of them flew backward as if hit by a tidal wave, crashing down at Finnegan's feet. Blood streamed from their eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.
One by one, they stopped breathing.
Finnegan blanched, then forced himself calm.
"No wonder you dared come back. So you picked up a few tricks out there."
"But you think that's enough to run wild in Jenos?"
"Sorry. Not even close."
"Mr. Mateo, I'll have to trouble you today."
"Help me kill him."
He turned to the elderly man at his side who hadn't moved this entire time. His tone brimmed with respect, his posture lowered.
The old man inclined his head and took a single step forward. A razor-sharp aura flared off him.
"War God Level."
Flynn recognized him at a glance.
One of the Farrell family's four consecrated guardians-Mateo.
A mid-tier War God Level Martial Artist.
One of the top experts in Jenos.
(Warrior Level, War General Level, War God Level; each tier split into lower, middle, and upper.)
