Chapter 194

I drag the hybrid's body, my mind full of unanswered questions. I couldn't help thinking of the last two hybrids that attacked and wondering whether these two incidents were somehow related. "What do you think?" I ask Nyx, not caring if the man I was dragging got hurt or not. He doesn't deserve any kind of care. Anyone who is against is an enemy, and I refuse to show any kind of mercy to my enemies. "Honestly, I don't know," she answers, her voice sounding a bit lost. "The way he attacked us doesn't seem as planned as the last attack." I kept quiet while my mind wandered to that day. She's right. The other two hybrids seemed to have beefollowing since I arrived in the small town. They waited for the perfect time to attack. Nyx continues, pulling my focus back. "If he were after you, he would have attacked while you were out. You were more vulnerable with Aspen with you and an attack, then it might have been easier since you would have been more focused on protecting our daughter." Now that she put it that way, it made sense. Why would he try and attack here in the pack where there were thousands of wolves? Sure, hybrids are strong, but one against hundreds of warriors? He wouldn't have survived. "So, he just happened to be passing through? And we happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time?" Nyx scoffs before saying, "We caught him, so it's more like the right place at the right time." "You wanted to kill him," I remind her. "And you stopped me, so that's a win." She stays quiet after that, choosing to close her eyes and take a nap. One thing botheredthough. He was in pack land; how did he manage to sneak into Alec's pack with no one noticing? It would have been different if we had crossed him at the borders, but we weren't anywhere near the borders. So, how did he manage to sneak in? My thoughts are interrupted when I catch a familiar voice. I was so lost in my head that I had not even realized that I had neared the packhouse. I look up and freeze. Micah and Alec were standing together, and I was completely naked. It was too late to do anything. I know most think that being nude as a werewolf is a common thing. It is, but it's also different, especially in my situation. I view Micah as a sibling. An older brother, and with Alec, well, I'm not even going to go there. Micah's eyes widen before he quickly turns around, his back to me. I would have laughed under different circumstances. Alec, on the other hand, his eyes stay on my face. There is an emotion in those green eyes. Desire, need, remorse, affection? But the last one can't be right. It's just not possible. I continue staring at him, challenging him. I don't know why I do it. Maybe because I want to prove to myself that the only thing he wants from me is my body and power. Maybe because I want to prove that he feels nothing except sexual desire. His eyes don't leave mine, though. They stay glued. It must have been just a few minutes, but it felt like our staring contest lasted a century. Eventually, with a small sigh, I look away and down at the body I'd completely forgotten about. Leaving the hybrid's body there, I quickly duck into a bush. There are clothes hidden in different places across the pack. The bushes are usually the most convenient place to hide them. Just like I guessed, find a tank top and a pair of gym shorts. I don't waste time and change into them. When I am done, I get out of the bush only to find Micah and Alec looking down at the man. "Hybrid?" Alec guesses, and I nod my head. "He attacked while I was on a run," I simply answer while studying the man. He was probably in his late twenties or early thirties. I couldn't tell. The fact that he fought with jerky movements proved that he was probably newly turned. We didn't even break a sweat while bringing him down. Hybrids are harder to kill compared to normal werewolves and vampires. Especially those that have been hybrids for a while. The fact that we were able to bring him down with a little more than a bite shows that he's probably newly turned. Turning to Micah, I find him studying the hybrid. "This is the second time I've crossed a hybrid, and the first time I've seen a live one," he mutters before squatting to study it further. "Would you mind locking him in the dungeons?" I ask. "We can question him after he has regained consciousness." Micah nods his head before calling two warriors to drag the hybrid to the dungeons. Once they've disappeared, I turn to the two men. "You need to up your security," I inform them. "The fact that he was able to get into the backlands undetected shows a serious breach in your security." "Where did you encounter him?” Alec asks, his gaze piercing mine. "South of here, I wasn't near the border, though, if that's what you are thinking." I don't know why I expected him to argue. This pack is among the largest and strongest., It's something that Aled has always been proud of. He was able to take his predecessors to heights they never could. I thought he would brush off and claim that no one would dare infiltrate the pack. It's what he would have done before. Instead, he turns to Micah. "Find out who was on patrol in that region and who was stationed at the border," he commands. "I want answers. I want a report on why and how a hybrid was able to get through our border patrol." "On it," Micah nods before leaving. The air turns awkward once Micah is gone. I stand there, shifting from foot to foot while Alec continues staring as if I am the most interesting specimen he has ever crossed. Feelings swirl inside like an angry tornado. I'm taken back to the reason why I was out in the first place. It was to escape thoughts of him and the feelings seeing that shattered look in his eyes evoked. I stare into his eyes, expecting to see accusations or maybe anger, but there is nothing except understanding. As if he understood why I said those brutal words. I expected him to say something. Anything. He doesn't, though. He remains silent, letting his eyes do all the talking. I decide to leave when I can't stand the silence anymore. Which is plain weird, because when he had something to say, I had a problem. Now that he doesn't have anything to say, I also have a problem. I don't even understand why I stood there for that long when I had nothing more to say to him. It's so fucking confusing, and I hate being confused. Maybe it's because of the full moon. That makes better sense, right? Walking around him, I make sure not to brush against him as I leave. I hold my shoulders high. I feel his scorching gaze on my back, but I refuse to let him see just how much it's affecting me.
